New shoes and pain

Captain Samuel Vimes "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

The reason the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in the city on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

Difficult to apply that theory to modern day living though. Since many of the things you buy now (phones, TV's, PC's etc) aren't 'future proof' regardless of how much you can afford to throw at them.

And yet it still applies to my wife, who buys endless pairs of cheap, crap shoes that barely last her 6 months.

Agree with better fitting shoes would help.
Don't see why people put themselves through pain just to wear a cheaper pair of shoes!

If I put a pair of shoes on and they are uncomfortable then they aren't for me. I'll keep looking until the right pair turn up that are comfortable. This normally involves spending more money :(

Spot on...if shoes are uncomfortable then they don't fit you, 'breaking them in' is a bit of a myth. They should be comfortable when you try them on.

Regarding quality and price, my last pair of shoes were from Clarks, cost me £70 but I've worn them for about three years every day. They were slip on and I noticed the other day that were finally starting to give and they were coming loose...very impressed with how well they have lasted though.

I had a friend that told me the way he gets a new pair of leather boots to fit, was but putting them on and then squating in a bath filled with several inches of warm water.

Never tried it myself, the mental image of him in the bath wearing nothing but boots was enough to put me off :D

I find breaking in football boots a real nightmare, can manage an hr but then can hardly walk after that :(

edit: ^ disagree with it being a myth - it depends on the shoes/material/shape etc.

Last thing I'd do with leather is soak it in warm water. I made the mistake of doing that with my Bull Terriers harness when cleaning it. Ruined the thing.

It's not a myth I read it on the internet. :p;)

Couldn't rightly say with footy boots but my experience in shoe buying has certainly backup up theory of not having to break them in.

Because people like me would rather buy many pairs of cheap shoes for variety, than have just 3 pairs of expensive comfy shoes.
I have over 40 pairs of shoes... Variety is more important than comfort for me :o

So buy more comfy shoes.
Great, have a variety of crap shoes that don't fit well and hurt halfway through the day/night. Quality :p

MisChief is a girl lol.

I'm glad girls put themselves through the pain of wearing 'uncomfortable' shoes (e.g. heels etc), makes them look all the more attractive :D

Which raises an interesting point... Why do men find high heels attractive? If anything it makes feet look vaguely like trotters.... :o

You do realise what heels do for posture etc, don't you?
