thanx for the tip, I didn't know this website
cheers

Impulse is a content delivery system very similar to Steam, indeed it technically pre-dates it by a couple of years (When it was known as Stardock Central). Functionally, its almost identicle, the only real difference is that you don't actually need Impulse running to play the games, unlike steam. It is just used to download and patch the games. Indeed, you can uninstall Impulse once you have the game downloaded if you like, though you may need to reinstall to patch.

Much like Valve pushed Steam with their Half Life 2, Stardock use impulse exclusively for their games, such as the Galactic Civilization series, Demigod, Sins of a Solar Empire and Elemental.
Its a good system, but as they are a fairly small player in the market, they usually can't match Steam's sales, plus they often struggle with the larger publishers to get worldwide rights to games, so often they aren't purchasable outside of the US, but if that's the case then you can't actually buy it.

Updated with todays deal, though given Gish was in one of Steam's indie packs last week which cost less than this one does, its hardly a deal. Oh well, lets hope for tomorrow!

Steam's Christmas deals will be immense, I won't be purchasing anything until those start :)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to those more, I must say. But hopefully there's going to be their exclusives included in the deal as well. Things like Gal Civ2 or Sins.

Thanks for posting this iviv. There was a comparison of different Direct Download services on Steam Forums and in many cases, Impulse came out ahead of Steam.

Not many games I'm actually interested in though.

I hoped they would either break the Best of Tilted Mill pack down or sell it at a lower price. £8 is a little much considering that you can usually get 3 awesome games from Sales at this cost. The pack is still up, I might buy it if no other use for this money comes to my mind.

It's Thursday the 2nd today, not Tuesday btw :p

Fixed ¬_¬

As a service, I find Impulse much better, it doesn't need to be running in the background, and most of the time it actually downloads the retail program, unlike Steam which has steam DRM added. So you can use the normal retail patches most of the time, and on occasions this makes it easier to mod.
Though for Stardock's own games they don't release seperate patches, you have to patch through Impulse, much like Steam.

As I mentioned above, the problem is that they don't have the market share to complete with Steam's pricing most of the time.

And you can buy the Tilted Mill games seperately, but three of them would cost more than the pack anyway.

Yes it was, to both of those points. As I mentioned in the post when I updated the thread, that one in particular isn't much of a bargain at all, but I couldn't simply not include it in the thread because of that :p

Impulse can be very good - and do have great offers at times.

But something very important to consider.

When buying any games that could involve multiplayer aspects, look very closely at the description as a lot of them dont include it on the impulse version.

Really? Could you name an example, as I've never seen anything like this :o

Updated with todays deal, not a game I'd heard of but it does look rather interesting. Petroglyph are made up of loads of ex-Westwood employees, so its good to see a new game from them. Only been out about a month, too.

Im waiting to see if elemental comes on offer.I was put off by the poor early reviews of it but its at v 1.09 so im hoping it has been fixed. Also the £32.04 price tag is annoying
