Hi all,

I am looking at getting a new PC for Cataclysm. I have a budget of about £1000(maybe a bit less).

My main issue is that I can't decide if I should build one myself (always fancied the idea) or buy one of the pre built systems from OCuk and such.

The idea of building one myself does appeal but I am a bit worried about buying the wrong components.

The system I am aiming to build would ideally be able to play WoW at 60+ fps during raiding.

I would also like to know if it is worth getting an SSD if I will mainly be playing wow only.

Sorry for the wall of text, Just a bit overwhelmed by what is available :)

Thanks

Hi and welcome to forum

Just to confirm a coupla points first

Do you need windows in that?

Also do you need things such as Monitor, mouse/kb speakers or is it just the tower?

Thanks. Completely forgot about peripherals. I do need windows 7 but I should be able to get a student copy of that for pretty cheap.

I have everything else I need mouse/keyboard/speakers wise. Just needing a tower.

building a PC is not difficult, it just takes time. You must be methodical, and assemble in the correct order. Its easy enough to buy a pre-build, and you will get a better PC if you buy the components seperatly. As you are not paying for someone else to assemble it for you.

Here's a spec for you:

Although I would wait till the new year when Intel's new platform will be coming out, also the replacement for the 5870 is due out this month

I'll let more experienced PC builders advise on whether or not you should build your own. The only thing I'd mention is that buying a pre-built machine does buy you a level of peace-of-mind and in OCUK's case it's hardly a rip-off, but if you want to assemble it yourself posting your parts list on this forum for a once-over before buying is a really good idea.

Intel CPU's and nVidia graphics tend to perform better than equivalently priced AMD components in WoW, but no so much that you should deliberately avoid AMD if you can see a great offer.

As for an SSD, it's probably the very best upgrade you can get for WoW once your spec is up to a minimum level. Lore of Tankspot recently posted a vid comparing performance with and without an SSD and it the difference is significant. You can see the vid here. If you do grab an SSD make sure you have Windows 7 so you can take advantage of Trim.

A 60GB SSD is fine for Windows + WoW.

Ever tried moving a tower around halls, I assure you it is not fun :p

Compact pre-built OC is good, not sure if ocuk would do an i5 build for you though. You could build your own for about the same as the i3 prebuilt, but you can cram a lot of power into one of these small cases like rikoneill, it's just takes longer and costs more than an atx build.

If you consider building yourself, the project logs section has everything from the basic to the totally bonkers :D Size is something to seriously consider if you're a student, might not seem much but come the end of the year..

Either go for the Hellscream if you want prebuilt, if you do Id get the 120gig SSD, seems to be best value
