Got a netbook with HDMI out on it and would like to output the video to my old TV, is there any way of doing this?

I've done it before with an older laptop using an S-Video + 3.5mm audio jack plug to scart using an adapter and cables I found online but didn't know if I could do it with HDMI?

Don't think it's possible to convert HDMI to SCART, although you can get a converter box that will transfer SCART to HDMI. You could look at using the VGA port perhaps along with a PC to TV box which cost's around £30.

Not easily doing able without some funky electronics.

Even then the advice I give in these threads is old CRT TVs are not monitors, they look rubbish when you try to use them in such a way. The effort > the result.

Meh...bummer. It's only for films/TV and it works really well on the old laptop with avi files or DVD rips in VLC because I'm plugging it into an old 32" CRT in the lounge so it's much more social for watching stuff than on a laptop screen. the video is no worse than just watching regular TV and the audio is much better than using laptop speakers. The laptop I've currently got doesn't have VGA on it either, just HDMI.

I just had a look and you can get black boxes that do this conversion - but you need to spend around £100 for the ones I have seen.

As JB mentioned, the video quality will still be pretty poor by modern PC monitor standards - so the expense hardly seems worth it. For this kind of money you could buy a half-decent 22in 1080p monitor.

Yeah, I found a few black boxes but they're really expensive, would be better off getting a dvd player with usb slot at the front that plays xvid or avi files for that price. The s-video cable setup was only about a tenner when I got it so was looking for a similarly cost effective solution.

google this:

PS3 SCART Cable: Playstation 3 to RGB Scart Cable 1.7meters

£4.19 + postage should do the trick.

or does ps3 have some weird connection port?

That connects from the AV multi out of the PS3 - so if he were trying to run a PS3 on an old telly then it would be ideal.

However, the OP is trying to run a netbook (small laptop) which only has a HDMI output for video output. As such - that cable will not work, at the minimum they need a system that converts the digital HDMI (DVI) video signal to analogue video and then to the format used by composite, these devices are not cheap.

do what i did , buy an divx dvd player (one with a usb port) and a usb memory stick , avi / divx / xvid etc can run right off the usb stick plugged into ur dvd player , dvd player cost £20-30 , stick well deppends what size and speed u want the stick to be we will say £5-20

If you want to watch HD Movies I suggest getting a a decent monitor. If you are watching SD Movies I suggest buying a dvd player with a usb port. I recommend you buy the monitor.

Yeah, seems like the best bang for buck bet. Cheers :)
