I've been sitting here looking at the M&S Rallye tyres I have, thinking how awesome they'd be out in the snow at the moment, and it got me thinking; Do you think the Police would really care if you were driving around on non road-legal tyres, considering they are obviously much safer than standard road tyres.

Thoughts?

Edit: Tyres in question;

Is it 3 points per tyre or 3 points for 4 ilegal tyres as its the same offence at the same time?

If it was me i would hate to have 12 points at the discretion of a copper, id give that miss.

Not just tyres but M&S tyres!

Branching out into new markets a bit aren't they!

How do you know they will be any good in snow if they are gravel tyres?

Considering it says not for road use on the sidewall don't bother. If you did have an accident then you'd be entering a world of trouble.

M&S are not as good as the name suggests.

They work on the principle of snow being powdery material like mud/gravel/soil. In reality its a wet fluid once subject to tyre pressure that then tries to grip on smooth circa freezing wet tarmac. Stock tyre for mine is a M&S spec but snowbelt region drivers will always switch to a winter, usually the Bridgestone Blizak

It's supposed to be per tyre but it's under the discretion of the copper.

If he does you a favour - 3 points

If he shafts you - Bye, bye Mr. License :(

Did common sense take a leap out the nearest window while I wasn't looking?

If your concerned about handling in current weather conditions find some appropriate road legal tires.

why would you get tugged for them to check your tyres? it chance it
The police used to be quite hot on this sort of thing. I'm surprised I've never been stopped about the tyres on my T because they are giant crossplies with radially running treads. Technically they're legal, but they don't look it and they aren't exactly hidden from view on mine :p

yeah, road legal like some R888s

i'd put them on, the police would probably pat you on the back for putting some good tyres on there

and another edit: i have 4 point harnesses that also say, not for road use but in this country they're legal, ive asked about and its fine, it got its MOT and i also pointed out what it said on the back of the harness.. just because they may say illegal may not mean they are.. where ever they're made, may say illegal, but the uk says they're fine to use..

All-Season Tires with Mud and Snow Designation
If a tire has MS, M+S, M/S or M&S on it, then it meets the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) guidelines for a mud and snow tire. For a tire to receive the Mud and Snow designation, it must meet these geometric requirements (taken from the bulletin "RMA Snow Tire Definitions for Passenger and Light Truck (LT) Tires"):

i have michelin LTX M/S n my jeep but they arn't recommended for deep snow, they don't have the ********* symbol on them.
