This is the front cover of my magazine AS media project to design a magazine. Done in Photoshop, it took me about an hour.

Would you buy it? I would love some feedback from you guys, and it is the first draft, so anything that you would like to see added/changed/taken away? Thanks for you time, Raikesi

Are you trying to appeal to all motorists?
I personally prefer a magazine to be mostly all about what I want, rather than a small part.

I'm trying to appeal to car enthusiasts, but those who find TopGear a bit immature. It will be based solely on cars, so reviews and features based only on cars and nothing else.

I wouldn't buy it. I'm afraid it does look quite amateur.

F1 bit is good. Title looks simple and basic.

The Defender SVX and Still good, writing is too blurry and not easy to read.

Black boxes aren't placed well and you could fit more content on the front page.

Barcode is poorly placed. Should be in the corner out of the way.

Hope you can see this as constructive criticism, not having a dig, but trying to help you better yourself.

Thanks mate just the response I need. Have been trying to find a better place to put the boxes but still not quite sure where they should go. I will have a go at it in college tomorrow.

I find top gear magazine quite different to the show, a lot more factual with proper reviews and articles

IMO Lose the black boxes instead put a simple block along the bottom to put the other bits in including the barcode in one corner. Also photoshop out the background in the Gallardo pic leaving just the car. Also drop all the font sizes apart from the main title.

Other than that good work :)

For inspiration google Octane Magazine. Their covers are always great and follow your theme of a photo taking up 90% of the page.

£3.00?! You crazy!

Take a look around this site for inspiration: youkioske it's not in English but it's full of magazines which you can use flash to read, even Evo.

Thanks for the link. I don't see why you think the pice is very expensive, TopGear is £3.95

Man I used to remember thinking my subscription to PC Format was too expensive back in the day! I was only a kid then though so it used up all my pocket money :p Was worth it though for the free demo discs :D

Your barcode is wrong:
Kraftwerk - Just A Fest
Thats the barcode number you have used . . . . :p

I think the fonts have some letters too close together, remember it would be initially read at a distance.

The inconsistent size of line spacing between the text in the left and right boxes bugs me the most.

Also is that the resolution that your final submission will be in, or did you just resize it down for this post, as that is going to look awful if you ever print it on a good printer.

I like the title font and the Landy photo, though I think the Landy should be slightly more central.

There are some assumptions that you will have to make for a project like this - it will simply not be possible to put the raison d'etre on the front cover of the mag and appeal to a very wide audience.

Surely if you've been given a media project you will have been given a brief as to what the cover is supposed to promote? More sales? 4x4 owners? What's the call to action? Where's the simple organising thought for the publication?

If you're doing AS media, I'd guess you're relatively new. Try printing out your design, walking down to WH Smiths, putting it on the shelf and then cringe. Don't take it the wrong way - the publications you're comparing to are likely to be one of the areas you could be aiming for, and the difference will be night and day.

Just keep it simple and to the brief, and never be scared to challenge the brief.

Hmm...

I would make use slightly smaller fonts for the F1 bit and add a subtle plain background behind the cars

Darker shadow around the title font

Web address next to "the" and above "drive"? (shamelessly stolen from TG mag)

Move the "headline" up a bit with less blurryness

Would use solid black shadows around the fonts for some of the other stories instead of a black "text box" like you have used, if you must use a box to put text onto then keep it to 1 line of text in height

Move barcode to bottom left and chop it in half to make it smaller (shorter lines not less of them of course! :D)

Cut out the background of the embedded pic

play with placement of the smaller stories
