is it dead or is the laptop rejecting it?

i am the proud owner of a hp touchsmart tm2-2050ea. As standard it comes with 3gb of ram (2gb stick and 1gb stick), but can take a max of 8gb. I found a 2gb stick on the bay that had exactly the same specs and an almost identical serial number as the 2gb stick already in there.

However, once i insert it (ive tried with only the ebay stick on its own as well), the laptop wont boot. The power light comes on, the fan spins up, then after about 5 seconds, the fan goes to max speed and stays there.

This leaves me with two thoughts. The stick is compeletly dead (ill try and get hold of another laptop later), or the bios is rejecting it (unlikely as ive swapped the HDD with no problem, but i have heard of these models bios rejecting other wifi cards and such.).

Thoughts?

current 2gb stick has serial no M471B4573FH0-CH9
ebay stick has serial no M471B5673EH1-CH9 (the only difference ive found is that this one is slightly older)

edit: just noticed that the ebay stick even has a genuine HP sticker on it, so i would imagine ti should work in another hp machine even if its a different model
