are these purely a novelty factor or do they give a true efficiency gain on the turbo?

the bloke i saw doing donuts in the snow in his punto gt in the tesco car park earlier seemed to enjoy the sound

I thought every turbo had one? They are there to prevent the compressed air going back up through the turbo when you release the throttle/change gear.

Most are recirc which don't make the noise. They stop compressed air going back into the turbo when the throttle is closed and causing compressor stall. They keep the turbo spinning for better throttle response.

It's worth noting that recircs can actually make a half decent noise when a cone is installed rather than a standard airbox

This is pretty much my take on it. Most DV's are there for efficiency rather than making the Brap Brap Whoosh! noise. I never really got the 'my car makes a noise when i shift' thing

a lot of people including myself run that set up, compressor stall doesnt really reduce the turbo life particularly my turbo is on 201,000 miles still pulling strong (will blow up now of course though) :p
