Hi guys,

What are generally regarded as the best tyres for the E46? My rear's are down to 2mm now! Preferably something under £200 on mytyres and perhaps with a rim protector!!

I've currently some Dunlop SP Sports on it.

I drive pretty 'spirited'

Cheer guys!

I like my vreds, though tests show them to not be as good as they previously were (in comparison to newer tyres), doesn't make them any worse though :)

I'm really happy with the all round performance and feel of the Contisport Contact 3. They come in under budget at £177 each on Mytyres. Alternatively, if you want the best in wet performance but at a cost of more boring stuff like fuel economy, life and dry performance then the Eagle F1 Assymetric is also a tyre I've had good results with. It's cheaper, as well, but only just.

A word of warning.

The E46 3 Series is particularly sensitive to mismatched tyres front to back. There have been reports of people having handling issues by fitting a different tyre on the front and back of the car.

As a result of this unless you are running something stupid like Linglongs on the front, I would be tempted to select whichever model of tyre you currently run on the front of the car.

The only issue with the Ultrac Sessanta is that the rears will wear very quickly. In less than a year I was well on to the limit marker on the rears while the fronts have another year~ left. I had probably done about 15k miles since getting the whole set fitted.

The Pilot Sport 2s lasted just over 20k miles although they tramlined like anything on certain roads down here but their performance and wet grip was very good and I found the Vreds to be just as good here too (minus the tramlining).

I actually forgot the place I bought them from £105 each for the rears, strange considering I bought from them twice now!! Will have a hunt :p

I <3'd the Michelin PS2s on my 330i. I extensively drove on those, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics and Dunlop SP Sport 9000s.

I even found mixing the same tyre with a very different tread depth caused problems on my 330i - it would cause the DSC to cut in at odd times when cornering as it thought there was a significant wheel speed difference front to back!

15k on the back of an RWD car is hardly wearing quickly..

Never had any trouble with my RE050A's although they are meant to be quite susceptible to tramlining.

I put Goodyear F1 Assy on mine, I was very happy with them and I had Michelin on the front but the car didn't feel like it was mis-matched.

bridgestone RE050A on mine - they are quite trammy - i testdrove one on pilot sports and this seemed to tram less. do seem to grip well generally though.
