ok im planning to buy a barebones system and upgrade. theres a 50 pound price difference between the two cpu's with the AMD being the higher.

Im not going to be gaming or anything like that, i will be doing mainly web surfing, photo editing, some video editing, and watching HD movies.

I will also need to buy a dedicated graphics card if i buy the AMD, whereas Intel hd's grahics will be enough for me with the i5.

Is there a significance performance difference between the two.

650 is dual core 1055t is 6 core even do 650 has Hyperthreading 1055 is much better for gaming and encoding video editing and etc

+1

Also, if you go for a barebones then you should have the option to get one with decent onboard graphics. Something like a 785G or 880G board will be plenty for your uses.

ive just read about this sandy bridge cpu's coming out, i guess i could wait until then.

when can we start purchashing them?

ok thanks a lot for your help

do you think its worth waiting for? or should i just go for the AMD option

i take it new motherboards will be needed for sandy bridge.

will everything be available on the 9th? or just some of the products

Well it looks like loads of LGA 1155 (the socket used by the mainstream sandy bridge CPUs) motherboards are already ready, with plenty of review sites pouring over them. So I reckon that as soon as the CPUs are available on the 9th, a wave of motherboards and full systems will arrive to make full use of them.

If you go to the link in post #6 the table shows prices - this should be the US dollar price for 1000 units.

To put this in perspective, the 1000 unit price for the i5 750 at launch was $196, and in the UK it arrived at ~£160.
