Mac for HD Video Editing

Thanks for the advice guys. I got the i5 with the 5750 from the refurb store. Will upgrade to a total of 12GB RAM as I've noticed several people complaining about issues with 16GB RAM on new 27" iMacs.

The whole package came with iLife '9, not '11 so I had to ring up AppleCare and wait in line to get them to resolve something quite trivial. Oh well, they're sending my '11 in the post. Can really comment on the performance at the moment as I've just been browsing the net with it and messing about with Garage Band. Trying to get Final Cut Studio on eBay for a good price so it may be a while.

I'm buying a firewire 800 ext hard drive (1-2TB) for the iMac. Two questions! .

1. When you use a ext hard drive for Time Machine, can you use it for just normal storage as well?

2. Is firewire 800 fast enough to be used as a primary source for editing HD video. I.E, is my footage best stored on the ext or int hard drive?

Special thanks to Brian8bit.

Eh?
I can run Final Cut Pro just fine on my 13' inch MacBook Pro

Yeah it will load just fine. Try throwing some 1080P 60fps Apple ProRes 4444 footage at it and see what happens.

That makes my iMac cry and thus why I'm saving for a Mac Pro. :)

Yeah Time Machine can live on the same drive as normal storage. You'll just need more space!

Depends on what HD format you're using. I wouldn't try something like the higher end Apple ProRes formats but for H264 you should be ok.

Oh and compared to CS5 Production Final Cut Studio is a bargain and worth every penny.

Thanks guys. At the moment I use Cineform to convert RAW 7D footage for the PC and it works very well so I hope ProRes will be as good.
