How to transfer credit card balances?

I buy, then I pay off in full. Another thing I didn't mention. I'm just full of contradictions and errors tonight :(. So no, no balance apart from the balance before I clear it for that month.

There might be a purchase I could be interested in, hence the inquiry to a new card.

Anyway, thanks for the various responses and patient explanations.

Then even if you had a card with 1000000000000% APR you'll pay not a penny in interest, so I don't understand?

I make only small purchases now which are easy to clear. The one I have in mind is around 2k, making a a one off payment less likely, and even less desirable. If I can spread it over 12+ months, it's more preferable.

You confused me with:

Because I have had it for so long, I get hit with APR rates

This implied you pay interest currently.

You need a card which offers 0% on purchases - get a card like this, then make your £2k purchase. You'll need to be reasonably sure you'll *get* a limit of £2k, mind.

the other thing to beware of that hasn't been mentioned (and indeed, it may have been changed since recently) is that different hings on your card can be charged and caluclated at different rates,

So if you have £100 on your card, and you balance transfer at 0%, say , (you pay your fee) but you can't pay that £100 off until you have paid your balance transfer off, so even though you have 0% on the transfer, you are still getting charged for the purchases balance, which you can't pay until you've cleared your transfers.... etc yadda kinda :)

Yes, I will get hit with APR rates if I make a big purchase, hence me refraining from doing so on my current card. I use it from time to time, but only for small amounts.

As you already said, I need a new card with 0% APR for X months to avoid getting hit by silly rates.

Don't worry, I get what you're saying even if you're not understanding me. I'll apply for another card in January and cancel my current one.

also buy the 1k item on old card and transfer whole amount. Purchase offers are always for smaller time frames compared to balance transfer offers

Err, not always. Not only would you pay a balance transfer fee doing that, you'd also get less time at 0% - the Tesco card mentioned is 0% on purchases for 13 months and 0% on balance transfers for 9 months!

Ar well thats just changed then because i worked for them for over a year but left in sept. Makes sense though because in about Nov the FSA made us changed how interest is charged.

The changes to the credit card legislation have nothing to do with this offer - it's just the way it is!

This guy is doing it allllll wrong. With the tesco card you get a longer term for purchases at 0% than balance transfers., 13motnhs against 9months.
