just wondering the answer to this, i created a thread a few days ago on how id incurred charges cos hotfile decided to troll me and take an unauthorised payment from paypal ( it then chose my credit card as a means of payment, god knows why) sending my capital one credit limit a few £ over the £500 mark. this incurred a charge of £12 sending my balance to £514, today i paid off this months interest and brought it back down below the limit and on friday i plan to launch £150 onto it.

my question is, this particular situation i was in and what happened, will it hurt my score ? ive never missed a monthly payment, had it for a year, only this one time did i go over by £2. i know just nearing your limit can harm your score so yeah i definitely plan to bring it down below 35% of the limit.

Provided this is a one off, then you'll find there wont be much if at all effect on your credit file (You dont have a 'score', nobody does). Just dont make a habit of it.

Also, I wish people would stop over-using the word 'troll'. 'Hotfile did not 'decide to troll you'.

i was never told by hotfile that it would be taking a payment out EVERY month, also if at least, id expected it to be taken from my debit card, so it did troll me, it looked for a reaction and it most certainly got one :P

also, cheers for the heads up mate, im defintely going to be more careful in the future with this card.

Usually it is up to the banks discretion, if you frequently pay off your balance, and just happen to be caught out by a small amount they may be merciful.

Happend to me recently, Capital One too, spent £4 one month and forgot to pay, got a £12 charge but nothing on my credit record.

Also Fox, you do have a 'score', the score is a value generated by the company you are seeking credit from, each company has their own methods of generating your 'score', it is essentially a statistical means of representing your credit file. Credit file companies like creditexpert can approximate a score based on your file, but you won't know if you have met the requirements of a particular card or service because their companies don't advertise the required scores.

joined it a few month back to see what was what, scared if i join again ill have to pay this time as ive already had a free trial :P

im glad everything worked out good for you, id be pretty bummed after a year of no missed payments if my credit history was harmed.

Ironically a small level of debt/charges can actually make your credit history look more attractive to lenders, etc. as they see the potential for getting more money out of you. People with spotless credit records are actually not generally the most preferable customer for a lot of places.

Another free trial here: http://www.equifax.co.uk/

Or you can pay £2 to see your statutory credit file. Not sure how it compares to the creditexpert one though...

cheers pal, just had a look my credit history is excellent, never missed a payment on any account in the past 6 years ive had to pay anything, just DEM searches, applied for a few loans in july, says they stay for a year. this was extremely useful
