I am moving flat in the new year and currently I have my speakers on spikes in the carpet which is no issue. However the new place has laminate flooring and as I am renting I don't think they will be happy if I spike the floor. Also I don't want to fall out with my neighbours because of stray vibrations.

After reading around it seems like I have a few options.

  • Remove the spikes
  • Sit spikes on coins
  • Spike shoes
  • Coins
  • Granite chopping board

Removing the spikes seems the easiest and cheapest option, however I am worried that sound will travel through the floor.

Sitting the spikes on coins seems the next cheapest however with the weight of the speakers (B&W602 S2s and Attacama SE24 stands 3/4 filled with sand) will just imprint the coin into the flooring.

Spike shoes make sense but seem to be expensive.

Granite chopping boards seem a good compromise however I am not sure they will cope with the weight and stability could be an issue.

Any help and advice is appreciated. :)

I'd maybe be tempted to try the free (well, 4p per speaker :p) coin approach first before buying anything specific.

Maybe with a bit of felt or something on the bottom to stop any markage.

Coins work great. I did the same for my AV rack holding 6 amplifiers, Sky box, PS3, Wii, DVD player etc and it didn't leave an imprint over a 12 month period.

Bluetack the coins to the floor then place the speaker stands on top and you won't have any issues.

Buy 2 squash balls, cut them in half. Place under speaker spikes. Done.

May give that a try, the only thing I was worried about with coins is potential stability issues.

Would they support probably 20kg +

Thanks :)

They would get squashed (pun not intended), but all they really do is give you a barrier between the spike and the floor.

I can't categorically say "yes", but I've always used them for my hi fi racks.
