I asked this in anotehr thread of mine a while back but got some mixed answers so wanted to double check before i go ahead.

I have the black ops ocuk system but need more ram so looking to buy another 6 gig to go with the current 6.

Am i right in saying i just need to turn the overclock off in the bios and fit the ram?

In my other thread someone did say that the system may not be stable with 12 gig ram, even with the overclock off, is there any truth in that?

I dont want to buy the ram just to find out it was a waste.

Cheers

Yeah i know how to physically fit the ram, its more the fact is it ok to do so since someone said they thought it would be unstable if you put in 12 gig, even with the OC off.

I need more because of the work i do, The ram i have is limiting me a fair bit when it comes to animations.

Yeah you would be best advised to go into bios and load default settings before adding new RAM. You will then have to start from scratch with the overclock yourself. By all means try the existing OC settings with the new RAM - you might get lucky, but more likely you'll need more juice or other changes with the new RAM added. There's no reason you should be unstable at stock speeds with the new RAM. Ideally get the same brand and type as your existing RAM. Better would be to sell the existing RAM and buy 12GB in a 3x4GB kit. You would have a much better chance of your existing OC working fine if you did that.

the clock maybe unstable with 12gb in. but if you up the volt a little it should be fine.

if you set it to factory bios then 12 will not make it unstable in any way.

what graphics card do you have?

Yeah thats what i thought hence why i wanted to double check. If it was factory conditions i didnt see why the 12gig ram would cause a problem, though i'm not the most computer savvy person so needed so reassurance.

Graphics card is HD5870

try to get the same ram that you already had

not the best card for your work although more ram will help

you need a nvidia fx**** not to sure what there upto now or something with more power than that

Taking an OC off a OCUK sytem

SINNER !!! :mad: + :p

My Ten Cents.
There is No way I would risk instability for the extra 6Gig of ram & would stick with my Tremendous overclocked system as is until there is a need for more than 6 gig. :cool:

In other words, do you really need more than 6 gig of ram ?

Yeah i know a gamer card isnt the best but it does the job for what i need. Its the ram thats a problem when it comes to rendering, gfx card would just really impact my viewport performance.

@Fortyfive

Thats my question though, why is it a risk to upgrade the ram? Am i missing something, as some people seem to say its a risk and others thats theres no risk at all. (as long as you take the OC off)

In terms of if i need it i do as i just cant render animations to the size im used to without the ram running out. Plus having spoke to a few people with OC'd systems doing 3D/graphics, they dont seem to have noticed much of an impact taking the OC off. I'm guessing it affects games etc more than 3D applications.

I think the variables are to great to get a definitive answer.
Basically the more ram you use the more chance you have of errors/lock ups etc
All you can do is buy matching ram & try it yourself in your own system. I do agree though that your 3D work will benefit more from a non overclocked system with untold ram than a clocked system with less ram.
Personally i clock to gain frames per second but always switch back to default for desktop as the ram i have is more than enough for what i need so i run a quieter cooler system whislt on desktop.

You can take the OC off just eneter the BIOS and load setup defaults.

This will set the system to run at stock speeds so you can put your extra 6GB of RAM in with no instability issues.

However OcUK warranty does not cover your system with the extra 6GB, only the spec it was sold with.

I personal believe 6gb of ram is more than enough for our gaming these days. Why and what the point of addition of another 6gb of ram to get 12gb ram as you will see the usage memory as there is 50% of those are a waste of ram usage (windows will not use it at all) The first 6gb of ram on the triple channels is more than enough on the 64bit operating system.

@Bulldog

If you read the thread youd have realised the extra 6gig ram is nothing to do with games.

@Nath

Cheers for the heads up, suppose its a question of if i need the warranty or not though before i fit the extra if i do still need to get to the bottom of the problem of the ssd that came with it.

?? warranty for what, The OC or the parts you sold as part of the system?

Surely the OCUK parts are still guaranteed for the duration of any warranty. It is like swapping a GPU or adding a card.

andy.

I'm kinda glad you brought that up as thats what was going through my head too but hadnt asked it.

Sorry I wasn't very clear.

The warranty is still valid however if there is a problem with the system due to the new components. The system cannot be repaired by us and the problem componenet will have to be RMA'ed etc sepeartly as it wasn't part of the system initially.
