First days are scary!

Its my first day working for a proper large company tomorrow.
I've just been told "its costing me a fortune to bring you in, they have given us some stiff targets to make it worthwhile".

So no pressure then.

Make sure you keep saying "proper" in front of every sentance and you'll be reet

Most first days they wont expect you to do much, you'll end up filling in paperwork, meeting the staff and shadowing one of your work colleagues

Must be a new guy... The industry will soon knock that happiness right out of you. :)

Central to everyone's needs, but bottom of everyone's budgets and opinions.

Depends if you're IT support or IT dev ;)

IT dev is a fantastic place to be. Assuming of course you're in one of the employers who realise that outsourcing development is a ridiculous idea.

Man up and get on with it.....:D

Seriously though, start as you mean to go on, be confident and you wont go far wrong....after all, you were picked for the job so they have confidence in you.

Sound advice. :)

Fixed. I'm sure it works well for some people, but in my 10 years experience in large corporate IT I've never seen it done well.

Proper crimbo?

You've never seen development or support outsourced well?

I've worked in outsourcing all my (proper) career, and have only bad things to say about both when kept in-house when compared with professionals being brought in.

I find "most" people that work in IT are pretty laid back, they have been in the two companies I have worked for, plenty of jokes, plenty of banter and you generally settle in within no time.

Sadly not, the exposure I've had to outsourcing has been because cost was the main driver. It's bound to happen though, when you've got a disgruntled work force being asked to hand over to an incoming force of workers known for being cheaper. Whilst the outsourced workforce may be great, if they haven't got the knowledge to pick up the role then they're never going to perform at their best.

Perhaps I should have been clearer, and differentiated between on and offshore outsourcing.

Ah, I've never been involved in offshoring, only felt the pain from it :)

The pain felt from outsourcing on behalf of the previous staff is only temporary, and most would TUPE anyway unless they moved away from it.

It's massively overrated. :D We work closely with offshored colleagues, both as support partners and customers so we get it from both sides.

Depends on how well it's been implemented I guess, we're still seeing the same mistakes made after 5 years using one particular company. Despite documenting proper process, fixes, etc.. Very frustrating!

I've seen both and been involved with both a various times (disclaimer I work for an outsourcing company)

Outsource, when done well, can work and allow for a smooth transition and allow a medium size company access to an IT department they would never be able to justify in house.

Unfortunately there are a lot of times where cost has been the over-riding factor and I know companies have had issues.

It's with a small, family-run business, and I will be one of three IT staff, so least I dont have to sit through all the corporate rubbish you get in larger companies...
