Basically I've just got my HTCDHD today. Coming from an iPhone 3G you can understand this is all completely new to me.

I have a mac too, so I'm used to plug-in, fire up iTunes and install apps, music etc from there.

So my question is...Where do I start?

Ive registered with HTC Sense? When I started up the phone. I've ported over my contacts from the iPhone using Bluetooth.

What next? Simple stuff I know.....Any must do's? Dont's?
Must installs?
Im looking forward to getting a free Angry Birds too, but I don't even know how to do that.

Well, music/videos etc are simple. If they're unprotected and in a supported file format, all you need to do is copy them onto the SDCard into a folder of your choice. Its that easy :)

Must install apps really depends on what you want to do; Sense is quite good out the box so RSS/Email/Internet are all covered pretty well out the box :)

I'd recommend getting the Opera beta browser (http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/). It's nicer than the standard browser imo. :)

For a nice live wallpaper, I'm loving Light Grid. The few apps I have installed run along the lines of Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Shazam, Movies (by Flixster), Last.fm, Google voice search, google maps with street view, barcode scanner, RAC Traffic, and myPlayer. Then a few games, like Angry Birds, Chess, Solitare, etc.

Definately get Apps 2 SD if you are on 2.2. :)

Thanks chaps.

I've just found the Market

Downloading a few of my most commonly used apps

Angry Birds
Shazam
Google Reader
ColorNote Notepad
Barcode Scanner
Solitaire
one or two others

Will look at Apps 2 SD
Will also grab Opera too.
Adobe Flash 10.1 is already on there, as is Twitter and FB.

So music and videos is just a case of copying to the SD Card? Nice :D

Haha no worries :)

I'd give the stock browser a chance before switching to opera etc. Htc's custom browser is better than the stock android one, and after trying the others, I always found niggles that'd end up with me switching back to HTC's custom android stock.

That said the download managers built into some of the other browsers are better for the likes of mediafire etc.

In terms of copying media, MP3s etc can just be copied, however if they're aac or another format you may find you may need a different player (poweramp/winamp would be good choices), and if they're protected you may need to remove the protection. Again one of the advantages of Android is choice...chose the one you like the best :D

Video really depends on the media format the videos are in. The stock player tends to be a little restrictive (as it tends to provide hardware accelleration). If you're having trouble, convert your videos to MP4 with the likes of handbrake and you'll be flying :)
Alternatively there's the likes of Rockplayer and VPlayer to try (I wouldn't bother with most of the others, as these 2 and the inbuilt media player should have codec support for anything you throw at them...whether the phone is FAST enough is another thing :D)

Would be worth checking if you have the latest versions of FB/Twitter...if not, download and install the ones from the market (that way the market will register you have them, so it will advise you of further updates).

As I mentioned before though, your must have apps will vary to say mine dependant on how you want to use the phone. HTC's email app is actually pretty good though so I'd imagine you wont need to replace that!

Yup. Or your can use DoubleTwist (an app and a desktop program) that mirrors your iTunes library and allows you to sync to your device. I use this so I have my iTunes playlists etc on my DHD.

All Android updates are OTA (Over The Air) so they'll download to your device as and when ready.

First things first, register with AppBrain. This is a site that mirrors the Android market and allows you to find and download apps via your PC/browser. See http://www.appbrain.com/app/appbrain-app-market/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps and http://www.appbrain.com/app/fast-web-installer/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apppusher for more info (and to install).

- Definitely get Opera Mini and use that as your web browser. It's blazingly fast.
- If you're into customisation, check out LauncherPro and SwitchPro.
- Feeling festive? Download Falling Snow Live Wallpaper :D
- PowerAmp is considered the best music player

Check out this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18137383&page=48 for inspiration on tweaks/customisations etc. Here's a couple of my wallpapers:

You'll definitely be happy you came across. Most of the popular apps are here too, and a lot of the apps that usually cost on iPhone (Angry Birds, WhatsApp) are free on Android.

Oh and wait until you use Google Maps/Navigation. It's so impressive. The first journey I did with it I was close to climax the whole way, and then I arrived at my destination and it showed me a picture of it from Streetview (as in, it actually showed me a picture of the place I was going to). That was the icing.

hehe thats ace. I did get navfree for the iphone and used it once. Handy, and nice replacement for a proper turn by turn satnav......but the speed of the iphone and its limitations has just become too much tbh.

I'm already glad I jumped off the iPhone wagon. It was the right wagon to jump on at the time and I don't regret it, but I think Android have taken over now tbh.

I now need to get a case for it. However, I'll post that in the proper HTCDHD thread :)

Oooh, RunKeeper....need to get that too if it's available!

Cheers. Will give it a whirl. I have paid for RunKeeper Pro though, so will at least give them both a whirl :)
