I've been living on my own now for about 2 months but this cold spell is rather expensive. I just purchased a 750w blower heater but i've read this is more expensive than central heating, is this true?. The insulation isn't the best in this place and i can't move into the main room till it's finished decorating.

Afaik the electric heaters decimate electricity, although I can't imagine having just the one on would be too bad.

A small blower heater will be around £50-100, a central heating system will cost £1000's depending on how many radiators etc. And where did you get your self-decorating room?

In general central heating is cheaper firstly because gas is WAY cheaper than electricity, and most people have the boiler on for part of the day to get hot water anyway, so pumping that heat around the house and warming up the whole house doesn't cost a whole hell of a lot.

But if its just you, in one room and you keep the door closed/relatively draft free, wear a lot of clothes and just have the fan on for a very short period to stop it being icy cold, then it might work out more economical.

Heating the whole house with central heating makes life much more pleasant though and vs a 750W fan heater on all day long to heat the whole house, will almost certainly end up cheaper.

Find out how much your paying per unit of electricity. I think our is 12p per K/w

750watts * 12p / 1000 = 9p per hour

I opted for the electric heater in one room option one winter. Never again. Kept forgetting to turn it off in the morning so would be on/off all day The bill was eye watering

Get a portable oil filled radiator - much more efficient than an electric blower or halogen and much easier to set to maintain an even temperature.

turn off all the rads apart from the one room you want heated surely?

Does that make a difference on the gas bill? , surelly it's run via the thermostat detecting the temps in the hallway.

This is all new to me :o

I use a portable oil filled heater as mentioned above for my room, will be cheaper to run and they are pretty decent.

Yeah about same here i am getting a 750w heater tomorrow for my room, Parents didnt want me to get one because the electric fire downstairs eats electric they said lol...when i saw it was a 4kw no wonder

Keep the central on low and wear plenty of warm clothes.

& consider cozying up in a sleeping bag when sitting around. (& bunnyhopping in s-bag to do cooking etc lol) Ah this brings back painful memories of cold bedsit days of my youth.

I have a 3 bar halogen heater in my computer room. It's 1200W, 400W per bar. One bar at 400W takes the chill off and warms the room nicely which will cost nearly half to run over your fan heater.

Google halogen heater. They range from around £15-£25.
