Well after much debating, looking, inspecting, test driving, and hunting, I bought myself a new car. I took onboard all the advice given here, and did do nearly everything advised. I had my heart set on an Astra, but still test-drove a lot of similar cars. To be honest though, I'm going from a W-reg Corsa 1.0L and nearly all the cars felt amazing in comparison.

Anyway, it's an Astra SXi 1.6L. 23k miles on the clock, and set me back £5950.

/commence Vauxhall hating :(

my missus had one, while not the best drive in the world it was utterly faultless in terms of reliability

That's good to hear! It's just had it's first MOT with no advisories and has had a service every year, so I'm pretty sure it's in quite good nick! :)

Not what I'd spend 6k on, but if it's what you wanted, why not.
Should provide you with long term faultless motoring.

Don't mind the OcUK vauxhall hater brigade, if you already know that it's absolutely horrible because it's 2% slower than a focus around corners they won't have much to add. :D

I have to admit.....I feel the same. I am sure it is a faultless car, good for value, nice drive, comfortable, etc etc etc...

But it's an Astra...

I am looking to buy a car in the next couple of months and if i am going to put down £6k, this isn't it. Pure personal preference.

I'm still a fan of what these offer aesthetically - I think they look great for an Astra in three door form. Not a fan of the drive though.

An apt upgrade for you though, by the sounds of it. Nice action.

Well yeah, I realise the Focus may be slightly technically better, but for the small margin it provides, I'd rather have the (in my opinion) better looking car.

Precisely. It's what I like, and that's all that matters really! Oh, and the fact it won't combust anytime soon would be quite a nice benefit too :p

I also love the way the 3-doors look. It was quite a big deciding factor for me to be honest, as much as some of the guys here might not like that, but as Raymond said, it's down to preference :)

A 1.6 Focus/Golf/etc with similar power would be just as (un)appealing imho.

Well if you would have bought a brand new 1.0 corsa and stated that you like it and it's all that matters you would have still got slated for it.
But you didn't, and got something that's reasonably good value for money and should have no reason to give you trouble free motoring.
So enjoy it. :)

I've found with this forum, and having been here less than 6 months that ALWAYS someone will poo-poo your choice of car, WITHOUT FAIL. no one seems to realise that car ownership and picking one can be a very personal thing and some people take such criticism very seriously.

IMO any car that someone buys, unless it's a total rust bucket that someone has been ripped off by an unscrupulous dodgy back street dealer, should be met with a 'nice car' or 'Good choice'. just IMO!

Good grief. :(

What happens if it isn't a nice car and isn't a good choice? Are you asking us to lie? Lies make baby Jebus cry.

Pretty ruddy pointless to have any threads at all then really.

Can't really moan at 6k for an 07 plate car. Don't get me wrong, I hate it, but its far from a ridiculous buy.

Just lol @ MissChief though.

lol, I'll have what they're smoking.

My 2p: Not a fan of Astra's.

* Also, you're not going to stick a load of Irmscher crap on it are you?

Funny enough people come here to avoid that sort of blind back slapping.
