Job interview dress code

Here's the wording:

We don't have a dress code here at [...] and the best dressed people tend to be here for an interview! If wearing your best suit helps you feel in interview mode then great, but don't worry too much about what to wear as we just want you to feel comfortable.

I get the impression their recruitment process is pretty relaxed and they're more interested in finding out about applicants themselves rather than judging how much "effort" they're putting in.

Even if a company has a fairly lax dress code it doesn't mean the person interviewing won't view poor dress dimly. The woman who did all the recruitment at my old work was a real stickler for it, shoes not polished properly, wrinkles in your shirt, shirt not tucked in properly. I know if you're dressing smart they're things you should take into account, but they didn't apply to the rest of the workforce.

And when the wife says "I don't mind, please go out with your mates get drunk and see a stripper" they really mean that too.

When going for a job in any respect put as much effort in as you can regardless. It can ONLY help. And since they will never tell you if you didn't get the job because of how you dressed at least if you don't get it its one more thing that you don't need to think about being the cause.

The question isn't why should you wear a suit. It is what good reason is there not to?

Suit for an interview. The only time I would ever not is if I was explicitly told not to or it was an "on the job" type interview where by I would wear clothing appropriate to the job.

The company I work for has a relaxed dress code with men wearing shirt and trousers with no tie, however I would still expect to see suit and tie for an interview, it will never go against you.

Its their first test.

We have a Graduate Academy and I can guarantee if any one came in in something other than a suit (unless they were exceptional - in which case they would - should take pride in their appearence as well).

Go in what makes you feel comfortable to allow you to perform best.
You are going to see an agency, they want to be able to promote you as best as possible.

Suited & Booted as many people have suggested.

Don't take your suit jacket off unless they offer you too. I always tend to keep mine on anyway even if offered, sweat patches on your shirt don't look the greatest.
