I always thought that putting warm/hot water on a freezing windscreen not only had a chance of cracking the glass but it also hardens up the windscreen rubber seal (over time), i.e. rapid heat change, which weakens it.
Dunno how true that is, never done it myself, always just used the heaters and de-icer.

Rubber seals concerns and you use de-icer?
Haven't heard that one before, what does it do?

I think your coat is still inside this thread as you left in such a hurry. I guess you were okay as you jumped straight into your instantly warm cabin of your heat pump equipped car?
But it does condition the air (drying it)

never knew that that not posting in a thread for 24hrs would lead people to believe id died or something ^^In my last post id asked a question and id kinda been hoping to get an answer to it but nvm, didnt want to re-de-rail (a word?) the thread by posting more on the same subject if nobody else cared to discuss it.
Well its the same base technology and the building ones work at like -14 degrees I was simply interested to find out why car ones are so crap by comparison.
Well one compressor and two pipes are enough to heat a room >.>

Thats odd, I read it as you categorically stating that your AC system de-iced your car and worked perfectly in sub zero temps and that I was wrong because you had 10 years AC fitting experience

lol, I never said it worked in sub zero temps, just below -4 [edit: meant to type 4 not -4], and I never said you were wrong because of my experience I said I could tell the difference between A/C and ventilation because of it, However yes I do still think the A/C heat is helping to de-ice the screen, otherwise why would it take longer with the A/C off?*Edited to correct mistype, bad spelling can stay

But why would you want to heat it and cool it at the same time, you either want the A/C heating or cooling not both simultaneously :S
but it cant DO both no matter what. The pump (compressor) only pumps one way.
A quick temperature change caused by pouring hot water on a frozen windscreen can cause and scratches in the surface of the glass to turn into a crack. As glass is a ceramic then the crack will propagate very quickly (brittle fracture) and could even cause the glass to shatter.
Using room temperature water on a windscreen isn't that bad as the temperature difference isn't great so the amount of expansion of the glass will be small.
Not sure about de-icer though mate, I'd assume that it wont do much as it'll have been developed to not interact with paintwork laquer and seals. Don't take my word on it though.

But unless you switch the pipes and move the orafice for evaporator heat capture you can't! Its decided by the arrangement of hardware when you build the car, not when you turn a knob on the dashboard!

Its nasty alcohol stuff that dries, discolours and brittles rubber as far as Im concerned. The environmental influenced paint changes that are happening are not quite being followed as well as de-icer is. Either it will take the wax of the car.
I just fill a bottle at night and now at work and leave it in the house, room temperature water needs to give up a lot of energy to freeze and that energy going into glass and some ice will usually end up with everything clear and glass above zero. Its when you use cold water you dont gain much and boiling water is a waste of energy and a thermal shock risk.
