What to do? Stereo related

I'm not planning on selling at the moment. Now that is cleared up we can crack on with the OP

Have you looked at the Denison Gateway's? They are meant to be very good for the money and will do what you want while keeping all features of your existing head unit. Not worth touching the speakers imo

Why not get a Parrott kit, they connect between your headunit and speakers and many of them can play MP3s, A2DP etc.

I've just looked into both of these thanks, i'm not sure I understand them fully but from what I gather they are not what i'm after, they seem to add iphone and ipod connections to the standard stereo and add a seperate control unit and stearing controls. I dont own either apple products and I wont be buying either in the near furture.
I'm after the other way round like the XCarLink, that enables you to play MP3's using the cars standard stereo and steering wheel controls, I just dont know if it will work on my particular head unit because of the DVD drive taking up the AUX ports

ignore that it happens to give you bluetooth streaming and ipod connections, they have a usb and headphone jack interface as well....

Listen to your digital music in the car

The Parrot MKi9200 is also gifted for music. Supplied with a specific cable, it is compatible with all music sources, such as iPods, iPhones, USB flash drives, Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) phones, MP3 players and any other analogue players. The Parrot MKi9200 also features an SDHC-compatible SD card reader on the side of the screen.

The MKi9200 displays the full playlist along with the name of the artist, the title and even the corresponding album cover in colour when available on the iPod, iPhone or USB flash drive.
Music is delivered through all the car's speakers, giving the driver and passengers exceptional sound quality and the breathtaking Virtual SuperBass and Sound Spatializer effects.

Like Tom says, whilst it adds iPhone/Bluetooth functionality that you don't need, it also adds a 3.5mm input, USB functionality and A2DP.

Ok thanks, that broadens my options then, I wonder if there is any local qualified fitters, i'll spend some more time reading up on them, only had a quick blast through last night

To be brutally honest I'd just ignore the blind apple hate that most people have, and buy a ruined, cosmetically fubar iPod 30GB from ebay (3rd or 4th gen). Nothing (I repeat, nothing) has better integration with any car system than an iPod with the right interfacing hardware.

As much as I dislike the stigma around apple products, and the stupid prices, buying a used iPod for as little as £20 and shoving it in a cubby hole, never to be seen again (don't think mine has come out of the boot in about a year) is essentially just giving you finite control over a HDD based MP3 system.

It's the exact reason I have iPod integration in both cars.

I bought an 80GB IPod recently for that very reason. Need to get rid of my perfectly working 4th generation 30GB IPod now as it isn't big enough for all my music ;) !

How is it connected

My current car has Fiat's Blue&Me Microsoft intergration which means Bluetooth and USB out of the box.

My previous car I bought an Alpine HU and Ipod cable for about £120, fitted it myself and ran the cable from the back of the HU into the glove box.

My next car - I've yet to really look into it but it'll be whatever the best OEM looking solution I can get in an e92.

Ok cool thanks, i've got loads of options now and no money, ha. I'll pick something up cheap in January as I really want something before I start the delights of the M60 and gives me plenty of time to decide

I used a radio transmitter in my first car for about 8 months and found it had no problems really, quality wasn't brilliant but I'd say the stock speakers of most cars let audio quality down anyway. I only changed as I had spare money and didn't like the cables running everywhere and having to unplug the Ipod and hide it every trip.

e92 with i drive works out of the box iirc?

Yeah I assumed they already had a solution in place, tbh I've not looked into it at all but would not consider anything other than an Ipod in a car now.

I don't even use my Ipod for anything else and purchased this 80GB purely for car use.

I've started using Spotify mobile now, and wouldnt go back to anything else....wonder how long until they put spotify into car headunits? knowing how slow things move in the in built car tech market, 2030 :(

Car audio is always like 5 years behind. 8GB HDD in my car, yay welcome to 1996.

I heard Spotify were in a little bit of bother at the moment, infact I've never used it and could do with one of those code thingys if anyone has one?

Remember that the Parrot units above also have a MicroSD card slot so you can play music directly off them without the need to plug your phone in.

I don't believe Spotify requires invites any more.

No, Free Spotify is open now (click 'Try Spotify' on the home page).

To get it ad-free or use it on your mobile, you need to subscribe.
