Sorry to make the 100th thread on student fees, was just wondering why non English MPs voted today on English tuition fees, as its clearly a devolved issue?
Cheers :)

It was an act brought before parliament, therefore all MP's can vote. (as far as I am aware) there has never been a situation where some MPs were barred from voting.

ridiculous isn't it, about time the Scots made up there mind onw way or the other and stopped wanting the best of both worlds

at least the vote went the right way though

Not this again. Scots (all the ones I know) are quite happy for only English MPs to be able to vote in these situations. We don't want the best of both worlds. It's only fair that you be allowed to vote on issues that relate to you and not to vote on the issues that don't. Of course it would be better if Scottish MPs abstained, I bet they don't though.

Really there needs to be a change so these issues are truly devolved for England also.

At least this time the vote wasn't carried by scottish MPs voting on matters that didn't concern their constituents...

It would be very interesting to see what the vote was if one deducted the votes of Scottish and Welsh MP's. I rather suspect that the vote in favor may actually have been by an even bigger majority if that was done as the Con-Dem's hold less seats in those areas.

Therefore the matter of the Scot's and Welsh MP's votes is pretty much a red herring.

I did the maths, or tried to.

Nay:
3 LD Scottish
39 Labour Scottish

3 LD Welsh
29 Labour Welsh

So it would've been: 323 to 228.

I couldn't be bothered doing the other parties (Plaid, SNP) etc... so it will be a much bigger victory for the coalition than the above - but it gives you an idea.
