Hi,

I have been looking at the Dell XPS laptops and would like to know how the following compare when gaming…?

XPS 15 (1366x768) 720p
Intel Core i5 460M 2.53GHz
4GB RAM
1GB GT 420M
£575

&

XPS 17 (1600x900) 900p
Intel Core i5 460M 2.53GHz
4GB RAM
1GB GT 435M
£625

I am aware that the 435 is a better gpu than the 420 – but I don’t know how much screen res affects performcance?

For example: How would they compare when playing COD Black Ops / AC Brotherhood on native res (720p & 900p respectively)?
Will the 435 still outperform the 420 despite the increase in screen size?
What about when you connected it up to a TV?

For those who are wondering why I am interested in 2 diff sized laptops.... Getting the XPS 15 with the 435 would mean getting an i7 (which i dont need) and set me back £675 (which I can't afford)!!

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

From my experience I would not touch any laptop with an nvidia graphics chip, I see hundreds of laptops every month with faulty nvidia chips.

If you want a gaming laptop, buy ATI.

But I would also ask yourself, do you REALLY need a gaming laptop, I strongly advise against it.

Agreed, with that budget, you could upgrade your desktop :) but this is laptops section.

Look at some other thread with a similar budget, might be able to shine some light on my ATI based laptops :)

Hope this helped.

Thanks for your input guys!

Im still not clear on how screen res affects graphics performance...
surely the same GPU can't produce the same performance/level of detail on a 720p screen than it can on a 900p (or when scaled up to a 1080p TV)?!

Maybe, but there might be some slight differences in performance. Native would be the best place to be imho.

Sorry to piggy back on this thread, but just received an XPS 15 with 1366x768 screen (was replacement for a stolen machine), and I am *very* disappointed with the viewing angles. They're so narrow that it's impossible to get both top and bottom of the screen to display correctly at the same time unless you are too far away to type properly.

Are all laptops like this now? I would have expected the XPS screen to be on the better side, if not up to Macbook's and the like. I haven't tried it yet as an actual "on my lap" laptop, but I can't see it being usable at that angle beyond "well, text is legible" levels.

Expecting to return it, but a bit browned off at having to pay shipping fees - I don't think the screen is of merchantable quality.

I noticed they didn't offer a high res option like before. It's a shame, their screens are usually good.

A lot of laptops have poor viewing angles / poor screens. (see screen resolution thread rant). You could check out a local retailer and see for yourself. Sony usually have the best screens on laptops.

I know my UL30A has poor viewing angles, especially compared to my previous netbook (NC10), which is odd.

Yeah, I saw a Dell Inspiron and thought it was OK, it seems this XPS is worse.

Although I find it's black coming out at about 30% grey that's the problem, and shops tend to have everything set to white backgrounds (probably for exactly that reason).

Looked at the Sony's but don't much like the Sony keyboards, and for work reasons the Nvidia card on the Dell was a strong selling point. Getting something similar looks like it will be expensive.

Macbook Pro is looking a tempting alternative. (Being able to develop on a Mac would have advantages).

Edit: My NC10 netbook was stolen too. As you suggest, far better viewing angles than either my stolen Dell or this new one.

Granted, I do have the eyesight & colour perception of a newborn puppy... but I was hoping that that any new laptop screen would look amazing in comparison to the 14.1" TFT screen on my IMB ThinkPad R40e!

Will I still be disappointed by the dell screen?? Can it really be that bad....??

Ok, the forums is screwing with the formatting on this table, but you can get the info you need to judge performance. Id say they would perform very similar at the native res's, but the 435 will be better on 1080p. heres a link to some fps numbers

go for the xps 17, another consideration is this ment to be portable a lot of the time or is it ment to be mostly a desktop replacement (to save space etc or whatever)
1400 points in 3dmark 06 is quite a good gain to be had from a 420 > 435 upgrade. specially for £50 notes
