Emergency - mains water

they did, through the insurance broker my wife works at so at least it is covered!

Its been empty for 8 months now, no idea why they didn't decided to turn the mains off and empty the system before they new the bad weather was coming.

When I was a kid I actually went to help check up on a neighbors house who lived abroad most of the time.

It had been absolutely freezing that winter and when we arrived with the keyholders, they could barely even get the door open it was so frozen. Inside the house was just crazy, the burst pipes had caused water to leak everywhere which had then frozen, so there were icicles all over the inside of the house. It was like something out of a film or story. Never seen anything like that since.

Last year one of the neighbours was on holiday in spain for 2 weeks, and asked another elderly neighbour to watch the house for her.

In went the neighbour and found a water leak, got us to come and lock it off. Turns out the owner had completely turned off the central heating and, as a 5 year old could tell you, pipes froze up and burst :(.

Good luck getting a payout on a empty house

For info, deaf people do play musical instruments as they can feel the vibrations.

Well done for trying to help. I think they will have a tough time with insurance unless they declared the property empty... although that's quite possible of course.

It's a good idea to turn your intenal mains tap off and on again a couple of times a year to stop it seizing. The same for your roadside mains stopcock (although the water authority is usually responsible for this if it needs replacing - but I'd rather it worked when I needed it!)

yeah, just had a natter with the wife about it after she came home. Insurance policy is set up for an empty house so it covers that, however one of the conditions is that between Nov and March the heating is on everyday....

Not looking good.

If nothing the worst happens i'll donate a couple of days to ripping the carpets out etc. Add it to my Xmas good deed list :)

Think I will have a look tomorrow online for some plumbing courses, find some local to the midlands that I can do around a full time job.
