New car on the horizon - maybe?

Problem you have got is that epic little car is an icon.

After that without spending a nice few quid, then a lump on insurance im not sure where you are going to go.

I would keep that Mini, for ever, and buy a Mondeo to run about in till you got some no claims under the belt then smash out on a Jag :)

And part of me was thinking getting something even cheaper, like a mx5 or a mr2.

Man up, do this and never look back.

You're only once young. Unless you've knocked up a bird and really NEED practicality I don't see why you'd be considering stuff like a Passat!? :p You don't do that many miles, you just seem to be after something that is more "comfortable" to drive, which you can get without completely selling your soul.

My previous cars aren't even that interesting/unique/characterful when compared to a classic Mini but I personally could not buy something along the lines of a Ford Focus as my only car unless there was remarkable circumstances involved (I certainly wouldn't consider it an "upgrade" as some here are trying to imply ;)). It'd be far too soul destroying for my liking :).

As for suggesting the MK1 Focus over the MK2 on image. Really? MK1s are old cars now. And not even the 'interesting' old either. Not a problem if you want a cheap runabout, but recommending one for a young guy who specifically says he was unique and character?

Just looking at civics now which are comparable to fiesta in price/year. I think the 3 door looks quite sporty, what do people think of them? Assuming that they are reliable and nice car to drive?

Nasty little Jap things :D

I love that old Mini dont go selling that for gods sake.

Did you not read my post? :p

Go Drive a Civic. Then drive your Mini. Then Drive a MX5 (preferably with the roof down and heater on full ). Then come here and tell me that you honestly still want a dreary run of the mill hatchback ;).

Like I said, haven't checked insurance but I have had one accident so is a mx5 out of reach?

I wouldn't have thought so, but I think the real trick is to ring around. Some companies are stupid and consider them to be a properly lairy sports cars and put the hilarious "We can't insure you until you're 21/25" restriction on them, but there are some sensible. If I can get decent quotes living in a postcode with a crime rate similar to basra at the same age I'm sure you won't struggle, even with the accident :).

I actually know a couple of guys who have come from classic Minis to MX5s and they absoultely adore their Fives. I guess it comes down to that old "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" thing that I'd imagine you know all about being into Minis.

I do as it happens love mx5s and it's always been a car which i want but didn't known it would be feasible at my age. :)

Ring around, it's worth it. I'm 21, no accidents, with 3NCB in a grade f* post code (the worst) and I've insured my MX-5 Berkeley Edition for £850 via an Admiral Multi-car policy. Definitely have a look at an MX-5 and give one a test drive, they're very fun to drive.

Mk3 mx5 seem to be good value as well as the older models. What are they like?

I'd say with your budget your best off with a well sorted MK2 rather than looking at the lower end of the MK3 market.

Perhaps but even with a sorted Mk2, isn't rust going to be a huge issue? :(

Thats the one thing I am also getting concerned with the Mini, it is getting rust in certain trouble spots which are notorious for rust on Mini's. You can't see it in the photos because it is, for example, starting to rust around the roof where water has collected on a rainy day at work. Its always been garaged every night so you can't really win. :o

While age wise, my car isn't that old when looking at mk2 mx5s. The difference is the mini is a design from 60s and apart from engine upgrades/better trim level over the years the actual physical design hasn't changed one bit.

This looks great to me: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2123560.htm
