If you had 25,000 to spend, would you...

How should I spend my money?
I'm 31, and I'm returning from living abroad to live with my parents. Absolutely no way I can afford to get on the property ladder now.
I don't even see much point in saving money either.
Don't want to get married and have kids.
I've only got about 13,000 in cash, so this purchase is hypothetical. I can easily save the rest living at home.

Personally I'd be saving like hell from here on out to get a nice deposit down on a house, but that's just me.

Having a nice car but still living with your parents (and making no serious effort to get out) is a bit sad in my book :(.

I'm an only child, my plan is to wait until my parents die and then I have a house. Might be 10-20 years though.

Property in the UK is ridiculous. I don't want some massive debt hanging over my head. It's makes me depressed just thinking about it.

LMAO.

Funny and tragic in equal measure.

Yes, but there are worse.

I know quite a lot of English middle class kids who haven't worked since graduating, and we're talking 3-4 years.

Seriously, getting a huge mortgage makes no sense in my opinion.
I really think the UK might be heading for a serious monetary shock.

Even better. When that sad time does unfortunately roll around you'll have 2 houses rather than one and should then have the means (be it selling or renting one) to comfortably bankroll some even more serious (and pricey) machinery .

Obviously It won't bring back your parents though :(.

Winner, get a grip and buy at least one property yourself for gods sake then you call the rental from mum and dads house pension when it lands.

I'll take one of those, please

(but without the aftermarket exhausts)

With this money you can buy Porsches, supercharged Jags & Mercs, Performance BMWs still in their warranty periods (just about) and modified Jap crap that'll make the most expensive supercars out there sweat at the Traffic Light GP. With this sort of choice on offer why on earth would you go spend it on a Jap hatchback? :(

18k will buy you a very nice E92 335i, I would find it hard to spend 25k on one when 18k will get you a good 06 / 07.

Mid 20's will get you a very nice E93 335i, you may even find a Audi S5 with high miles.

Or if you want something small and a little more fun how about a 135i? 20k should get you a good one.

All of those cars are European and are an utter ball ache, in terms of cost, to maintain, and buy, over here. 'Jap crap' is not hard to maintain nor buy. Of course, if this were a serious purchase then I'd go into the arithmetic a bit further. As it stands and at first glance, Euro = can be good but expensive, JDM = can be good but less expensive. I believe the term is 'bang for buck'.

Just for reference, I think I've seen three Jaguars (one today!) in the 13 months we've lived in NZ, Mercs/BMWs are fairly common but generally very low spec yet Porches are not unusual and are generally the higher end of the market; the prices are obscene, however.

On the other hand, I daily will see extremely high end Subaru, Nissan and Toyota models. I know they're not comparable to some of the cars you've listed but it's pretty rare for me to NOT see something on my short drive to work that would not look out of place on a race track.

Horses, courses, all of that good stuff :)

e : just realised you mentioned modified Jap crap, I missed that part. Modified JDM stuff here can be very hit and miss, if you mean modified by the owner. JDM-only versions of models can be great.

Out of the 2 I would probably go with the Focus. I saw one about a month ago with white rally wheels and mudflaps, it sounded like a full on rally car, my jaw dropped at its presence and the noise it was making.
Then again if I had 25k and free reign to choose, it definitely wouldnt go on a Focus or Evo.

I'm not going to argue about the merits of buying a house or not.

But since you've got the cash to buy the car outright, you now need to take a serious look at how much of your income you can have spare for running cars and if your parents are going comfortable with you having a flash car on the drive whilst still living with them at 31.

If they're fine with that, great. Make sure your folks are happy with what you contribute to the running costs of the house, and work out how much spare you have a month. I suspect it would be enough to afford to run most things mentioned here however if you're only paying at most 1/3 of the costs of running a home.

Hold on, what is wrong here? :p we have a guy who is 31 and is about to move back in with his parents (because he claims he cannot afford to live on his own) and is about to spend 25k on a hot hatch then wait for his parents to die and live happily eer after  people have being publically desstroyed for far less in motors before, must be because its Christmas or I have missed something :p
