ive added these components to my computer which i orderd from oc/uk does this system look like a good set up for video editing and general computer uses ie the odd game ,oh i also upgraded the case to the utguard case with the fans led ,not really sure if my system needs all that cooling but ,i have a passion for leds ie i own a modded maglite which pumps out a cool 1000 lumens .i hope this system will be easily upgradable unlike my dell which caused a few issues when i tried to improve the performance although im not really into overclocking ,im a bit wary of doing that ?also need a decent display any advice much appreciated ,i have been recommended the ben-q
take it easy paul :

no only 1 psu and 1 graphic card just stating the upgraded items .unless you suggest two of each .

No surry, just the way it was typed out.

I would keep the supplied CX500W psu, and just change the graphics card to a GTX460 which is significantly faster, and the blue ray drive is a nice touch too.

i know a chap who is looking to upgrade his graphics card next year and his current one happens to be the 460 so ill probably take it of him ,also its an extra 100 quid on top if i upgrade now,and i havent even bought me display yet ,is the 650w to much for my requirements is there a way of working out power drawn from system .

650w psu isnt too much, just unnecessary, its an upgrade you dont need, so can spend the money on the more powerful GTX460 or keep it in your wallet.

if you look near the bottom of these graphs - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/156 it shows the power draw of a Intel i7 system and a single GTX460.

Idle power = 160W

Load power while gaming with crysis = 280W

And load power while the system is being fully stressed using furmark = 310W

then use 2x 460 in sli

dont spend loads of money on i7 to cheap out ont he gpu even more so if its for games

if it is for games and you are running short of cash buy an i5 and better gpu tbh

had a look at the link looks like the 450 gts has not been bench tested ,certainly the 460 has more streams than the 450 ,might be ringing oc/uk monday !what happens if i run 2 450,s

looks like a change of psu then, modular is obviously a better choice and more future proof if there is such a thing .

just looked at the oc/uk website and you can get the 460 gpu for an extra 10 quid over the 450 might be worth it on this weeks special offer ?,,,,

yes.

and yes to the Antec psu if you wanted sli in the future?

All you have to do is phone them up and ask for the changes to be made to the system

ok bud i will ring them monday ,now i have had issues with me dell comp ,because its old and rubbish but dont wont to get rid of it yet ,always good to have back up i recently spent 250 on it new windows 7 ,more memory ,hard drive and graphics card ,thought almost there just pop in a new pcu ,computer says no .i was perhaps asking to much of the system to jump from a pentium d 915 to a q6600 dual core ,is there any existing pcu upgrade compatible with the dell motherboard 5150 ,or do forget it and sell/give it to some one .

What model Dell is it? It looks like there may have been a couple of revisions of that motherboard. Some won't take more than a D 945 while later versions may take up to a C2D E6600 (BIOS dependant). It may be worth checking with Dell to see if there is a newer BIOS for your model.

It is not unusual for companies like Dell and HP to use OEM motherboards with lower max wattage than retail boards, which may be why you can't use a q6600 even if you can update the BIOS.

Ah, I thought the number was specifically for the motherboard.

After a bit of searching it looks like you are limited to the Pentium D series. Probably not worth spending money on it for a relatively small speed increase (thats if you could find a faster model on ebay).

My parents have the 5150...Pentium 4 at 3.0GHz if I remember....gotta love that Prescott chipset...

You are a bit stuck as far as upgrading goes. All I could upgrade for them was the RAM, the DVD Drive and the graphics card. The motherboard doesn't support dual core (at least theirs doesn't), and the windows XP included is tied to that motherboard. You'd be better off starting fresh.

i have bought the verso viper if you read all the posts ,comes tommorow its in crawley depot ,exiting stuff i couldnt swing the other upgrades as my comp had passed qa when i rang them on monday ,just wondering with the psu is it possible to use a splitter cable to run 2 graphics cards in sli ,as my psu has only 1 set of cables for the graphics card?
