OMG Amazon down

It's probably having problems because it's being hammered from people buying music. Sunday night's the busiest night of internet shopping.

What media attention? People en mass are stupid and live within their own bubble.

Headlines in the next few days will be dominated more by the X Factor final. :(

Sure, but if NASA went down it may be slightly different, or GCHQ.:p

Nothing wrong with that BBC article.

They reported the story, but mentioned there is no word from Amazon or Anonymous as to the reason. If you think the biggest news gathering organization in the world reports stories without first doing some research, then think again.

Clearly Amazon is on it right now and they will have asked them for comment, but been told there is no official comment right now. Read into that what you want...

Then referring to the Wiki Leaks attack is important because it's been threatened against Amazon and it's unusual for the site to go down. How could any news organization report this story and not mention that a threat was made against them earlier this week?

I'm getting sick of Anonymous.

Actually. I was getting sick of them two years ago, now I really am.

It wasn't Anonymous! I've been monitoring their IRC Channels, the current target is Mastercard.

There are serious black hats taking down websites too, this isn't just a few isolated incidents, it's huge.

Personally, I think it's on the same moral level as picketing high street stores. If I knew how I might actuallu consider taking part.

Gotta love the people who are 'in with da hackers' on IRC so can categorically state whether it was them or not...

As for supporting them in disrupting other people, sounds about right... if you're 5.

It isn't hard to use IRC. What took me a while was actually finding the hosts, but still - it wasn't them. Besides, LOIC is hardly hacking. What i want to know is what do you think makes it any less of a viable form of protest than anything else, like physically picketing (which is more or less what this is)? Surely if it's viewed as worse because it's online then that goes a long way to proving their point?

Intentionally disruptive picketing is also very immature, the rough equivilent of sitting outside the wendy house blocking the door because you've been told you've got to share...

But then that seems to be about the average mental age of most protesters at the moment, they think they are standing up for democracy when actually they are just being a bunch of obnoxious, petulant and unsupported *****.

Well said Dolph.

I'm sick of hearing about Wikileaks, I really couldn't care less about the whole thing. Attempting to take down websites is pathetic.

Hear hear.

Urgh, you people make me sick ;)

Same could be said of most counter-revolutionaries though, just don't pay attention to them folks :)

Do you not consider there a difference between:

(a) A publicity campaign to educate the public on behaviour of a company (it's better if based on truth, not like the Vodaphone tax issue that even HMRC state is an urban myth), allowing them to make an informed choice.

(b) setting out to block people actually using a service, preventing any choice at all.

(a) is acceptable protesting, (b) is just being a ****. The population at large need more protection against the minority of immature idiots who think that (b) is a valid protest technique, because it seems to be happening more and more at the moment...

The mistake you're making there is the assumption that HMRC and large corporations aren't on the same side. Fact of the matter is that they haven't payed their fair share of tax, and if they had then we would easily have enough funds not to cut anything this year.

I'm not even going to bother with your other points, they're just words with no basis in fact. There are things that are more important than your shopping you know.

LOIC is coordinated by definition, so a place is needed to orchestrate it. There is one main IRC channel that is very well publicised to this end.
