Managed to drop my phone in water whilst drunk on Saturday night. Stupidly I tried turning it back on just after dropping it (the screen went all crazy and it was crashing).

Left it in front of the fire to try dry it out overnight. Put the battery back in this morning and it still doesn't turn back on.

I'll try again later and maybe try charging as well. If I plug the charger in the LED light glows Blue.

Has anyone got any other ideas about how to maybe fix this, or if there's anything could do to get it repaired? I'm on Vodafone, not sure if their repair service will be any use?

It's not insured so otherwise it looks like i'll have to buy a new phone. It's only about 8 months into the 18 month contract as well :(

so for the equivalent of £1 a month, you didn't choose to insure your £350 handset?

Bad times. You could check your bank account, some banks offer phone insurance as part of their accounting services

Didn't realise the insurance was that cheap to be honest. I've never damaged a phone before either, had my iPhone for a year and a half without even marking it.

I'll check my bank/home insurance but I've heard you often need to tell or 'register' your phone with them.

My son left his phone in his trousers and my misses put them through the wash... the first time the phone was fine after around 2-3 days in the airing cupboard, the second time it happened it was proper shafted and went straight in the bin. Fortunately it was only a cheap pay as you go mobile.

Remember to strip it apart as much as you can so that it can dry out thoroughly...

I have never seen, been offered, or know anyone who has, phone insurance for £1/mth. I would have thought if you could get it that cheap then it would be common knowledge...

Vodafone phone insurance is far more than £1 per month.

I don't bother with phone insurance. Never lost or broken a phone in my life. If I'd been paying phone insurance for the 15 odd years that I've been owning mobile phones, it would have cost me the eqvuivalent of two brand new HTC Desire HDs. Just don't take expensive phones out drinking [/hindsight].

Wardie, the first thing I'd do is see if your home insurance covers it. DirectLine personal possessions certainly does.

Cheers all, if it was £1 a month I would have, but i'm fairly certain it's usually a lot more myself.

The problem is I tried turning it on again straight away (I was drunk) and it loaded and the screen was all messed up and weird colours etc, and it crashed and died.

I'll try let it dry out for a good fews days and see how it goes, but to be honest I reckon it's going to be dead.

I bought my Desire only last week & have looked around for insurance, Same as Diablo i saw it at 6 quid a month so I'm on the fingers crossed policy.

I'm with lloyds and you are only covered if you register the handset with them. I did this when I got my DHD and the last phone they had on there was a blackberry from 2004! I have had 3 or 4 other smartphones since and forgotten to update them.

Only way to truly save it is so pull it apart and clean the board in WD40 to kill the water then with a quick drying electronic cleaner or equivalent, otherwise the dried on water will still eat the copper in the circuit board and it will eventually fail even if it did work for a while.

Though as you switched it on it may have fried something anyway as the water will have shorted lots of things out inside.

Use your phone in a sealed sandwich bag, it's the only solution :p

Also, don't use your phone like that on a plane, passengers will get angsty!

Aren't you meant to shove it in a bowl of rice?

Also, when I got my desire from orange, she said as part of the deal I could insure the handset for £12 a year.

This offer was repeated when my GF got the X10 from Orange

My HTC Magic took about two weeks to fully return to life after I dropped it in water. But I pulled the battery immediately after I dropped it and left it to dry immediately on my radiator.

I wouldn't use WD40 personally....

lol no don't use WD40.

I dropped my missus' Desire into a drain, it stayed there for 2 days (I'd just come out of hospital) before I managed to find it, it was totally waterlogged and looked like a lava lamp, I rinsed it through with cold clean water and then let it dry thoroughly. It worked like a charm and is still going strong now. The only way you can tell is that there are some slight watermarks on the inside of the screen, but not anywhere near noticeable enough for me to take it to bits and clean it off.
