Buying an XJ tomorrow

Thats good to know mark. Thanks.

It always amazes me at the wealth of first hand info on these forums.

I also have a problem with an Audi A3 if you know much about them! ;-)

I hate Audis !

Father in law sold is XJ8 a little while ago. It was stalling when cold which was causing it to flood - a royal PITA to sort out apparently.

He bought an X Type and didn't like it, bought an S Type and doesn't like it so is now looking for another XJ8. He rates them very highly.

Flooding on these is a proper epic, i mentioned that above a real pain in the arse.

The XJ went to some dude in France. The X Type he didn't like but I think the gearbox played up and he took it back for his money. The S Type seems OK to me but he doesn't like it and in his words "Its useless in the snow" I did say that the XJ would probably fair no better but his mind is set on another XJ. The mother in law has crushed vertebrae and the XJ is the only car they've found that doesn't hurt her going over bumps.

He knows about the nikasil issue but I'm not sure he really understands. He's one of these types that only listens to half of what his told and makes up the other half. I think he knows to avoid them.

Tell him not to worry about the nikasil issue now, if a car with a nikasil engine has lasted till now it will be fine, it was the sulpher in petrol that killed the engines and that was removed from petrol in 2000.

There is also a train of thought that says a nikasil engine if undamaged is actually stronger than a steel lined one too.

Havent had a chance to get down there Today unfortunately so will be Wednesday lunchtime now!
Getting a scan of the service history sent over to me in a minute so I can get on the phone and do the checks you suggested Mark.

Excellent all they need is the reg number and they will tell you exactly what work has been done and when :)

I'm looking at these again :o...

Do the values make any sense at all? I mean I was looking earlier and found a few tidy looking examples with full S/H, 80k/90k on the clock and 1 or 2 owners for around the £3000 mark. Then you've got a few cars on there that seem comparable but are up for £5,000+

Does around £3k buy a decent one? Obviously not expecting a show winning example, just something that isn't too tatty and doesn't require me to be on the spanners every weekend will do me fine.

I know 2 cars that are 4k each that have everything done that are a fine start, for even less money.....

This is what you want, i know that car and the man selling it, that car will last for ever. Proper people selling that.

That's gorgeous.

Not looking to buy anything until the early part of next year though :(.

Dont you worry i'l sort you a nice one out when your ready to join the Jag fold :D

Jag today, Bentley tomorrow, show them Jack Barclay swine your on the road!

I just want a car that isn't ****.

I was a bit embarrassed ferrying my mum about shopping in the Soarer the other day. It was tatty when I bought it but now I've managed to make it even worse with the boy racer exhaust, wiring hanging all over the place from my immobilizer fiasco and just general other ***** niggles. I've always told myself that it is a work in progress and as long as I can fire her up and take it for a spin it's all good, but now I'm getting bored with the pikeyness of it all.

I'm at the crossroads of taking it off the road and ploughing money and time into it or cutting my losses and starting again with something that wasn't a bit of a shed in the first place.
