Move in thursday, what electric/gas company are best?

That'll depend a lot on your usage, what's available etc, try uswitch.com for an idea, i recently went with e.on as they offered the best price for me.

Thanks Wez,

I have a 4bed house and be living there alone. I work away so probably there 10days a month.

Got a quote 498 with Npower, gas and electric. Seem ok.

Off topic, but why on Earth are you moving into a 4 bedroom house if it's you alone and only going to be there for a third of the year? Seems simple madness to me.

Get them to come asap and take meter readings when you move in! Take dated photographs as well. This will avoid future issues regarding units used and so on.

Why wouldn't you want a 4 bedroom house if you can afford it?

Move in and make full meter readings, stick with whoever is the current supplier at the moment.

I did a check when we moved in and actually went with the 3rd best price rather than the first, due to cashback from topcashback, made the 3rd price actually the best once had factored this in.

Got a great deal on the property, have lots of friends in the building trade and plan renovating and renting a room which in turn will make it about the same monthly payments as a 2 bed flat.

Seems like sensible business to me :)

Thanks for everyone elses rplys, also for the tips on photos of the meters :)

Npower always comes out cheapest on comparison sites, even though they aren't. Usually due to some £100 discount if you stay with them 12 months.
if you know how many units you are goign to use, do a spreadsheets and get the actual cost per units of the power company websites.

They are all bad but for the best prices do a search on a comparison website.

Do it by Direct debit as-well and remember and use Quidco or topcashback.co.uk.

To bump this..

I recently went with npower online 20, because they were the cheapest bundle supplier in the area based on my estimated usage. Paying with quarterly direct debit and because of various other conditions (dual fuel etc etc) came out £150 less than the next best quote.

Went through TopCashBack and got an extra £100 cashback too

we've changed back to british gas as the unit price on the eleccy was cheaper by a mile, with good customer service ratings. We dont use much gas as log burners, so it worked out best for us.

Decided to go with british Gas, Gas and electric bundle. I wont be at the house much so wont use lots so should be fine.

Thanks for advice, one of the meters was faulty so i took pics.
