what can i5 760 be overclocked too?

Any P55 or H55 will give you a handy overclock or 4GHz or as close to that as not to matter. The chipset is very easy to clock so basically you need to see what it is you want feature wise and use that as your means of deciding.

Basically decide what it is you want to do with the motherboard. What graphic solution you are looking at. Also think about your future upgrade path if that is relevant.

I like the BIOS of the Gigabyte boards for overclocking and have had huge success with them and the 1156 chipset. I posted a thread here on the forum about the Mini-ITX board that I used to clock my entry level CPU to 5.6GHz - so really any of their boards will allow a decent overclock. That is not to say the other brands are not worth looking at too. It is just a matter of personal choice at the end of the day.

so in your opinion would i be better going for the i5 mentiond above instead of the phenom II x4 970 ? reviews have said the i5 is better and has a better capability to oc but the phenom already has a faster clock speed, i plan on using the system for mostly gaming with occasional every day tasks i would also like to crossfire with the ati xfx 6880

it took me 10 minutes to find a stable setting for my i5 at 4ghz, and I've only ever overclocked once before. Also, I have to say gigabyte and asus BIOS's are much much better than MSI's....learnt the hard way :p

i'm going for the i5 with a asus board, what eese are you using in the build? how do you plan on cooling??

Higher clock speed on a slower architecture CPU doesn't always mean it's faster. Also, the Phenom II X4 970BE stock clock is 3.5GHz, and over average they would only overclock to 4.0GHz max, which is only 500MHz over stock; whereas the i7 760 stock clock is at 2.8GHz, and still got at least 1.2GHZ of overclocking headroom in comparison, and also not to mention the i5 is faster than Phenom II clock for clock. Roughly speaking, a Phenom II X4 overclocked to 4.0GHz would only be as fast as a i5 750/760 overclocked to around 3.33GHz.

i already have water cooling in excisting system have just ordered a ati 5870 so now want to change from a AMD duel core will be using exsisting hard drive and case ect just deciding on what board and chip to go for?

4GHz is a piece of cake with the core i5 750, so I'd imagine a 760 would be very similar, possibly easier?

I managed 4.2GHz on mine without an issue along with good temps.

This was using the EVGA P55 F.T.W board, G-Skill Ripjaws and a Scythe Ninja rev.b heatsink.
