Apply for extended warranty?

Is it possible with hardware, even if the warranty has ran out to extend the warranty for x cost?

I am thinking of getting a 30" monitor and would be great if you could pay whatever money to take out warranty with the manufacturer. Or even a warranty with a different manufacturer who could repair it?

I would imagine it varies with different manufacturers...
