bt infinity - what can i expect?

35-40Mbps

300GB FUP with email warning when approaching. Can also check usage on bt.com account, updated daily.

If you go above FUP, you get limited to 2Mbps.

Bittorrent uploads are throttled at all times (but I haven't experienced this on p2p streaming I do now and again). SSL Usenet is completely unthrottled for me, nor any other http/ftp downloads I've done.

18 month contract means, you have to hope their service remains at its current (v. good imo) standard as more people in your area switch to this service.

great news, thanks for the response. tbh right now i think i'd be hard pressed not improve on my £25 a month 1.5mbps connection from talk talk (i know, i know). just fortunate that it's coming to my area and i can finally get a decent service. 300GB FUP is absolutely fine for me, and not exactly a huge uploader so no concerns there. bring on bt infinity !

oh btw you say 35-40 Mbps download, what about actual upload speeds? mainly for gaming purposes..

People's speed seem to vary a fair bit here. Probably get no lower than 6-7Mbps.

It varies because it's impossible to predict which traffic management profile applies to which protocol/port.

At this moment in time you can expect total tripe service:mad:

They are having some sort of nationwide issues, which as yet they have not publicly admitted to, but apparently they are all isolated problems.

I am currently one of the 'isolated problems' and running at between 1-2mb. :(

Look at BT Care forums and all you will see is Infinity Slow threads

I'd have to disagree with the bittorrent statement as lately my uploads have been able to utilize the full 8mbps bandwidth.

Okay, following on from my earlier comment, clearly BT cannot control their traffic shaping policy properly, or they are majorly taking the mick.

All night I could get no more than 2mb, then shortly after midnight - bam - right back to 32+mb.

Dirty rotten scoundrels would be putting it mildy

No mention of it on their status page, nothing. Just terrible speeds all night and miraculously back to normal after midnight.

I just hope this is some sort of issue at their end that they can solve quickly. If not, then I am cancelling. This is definately not what I paid for :(

Like I said, it wasn't from my experience but others saying it.

And yep, for some random reason I had 2Mbps for a bit earlier. But I had outages on o2 LLU, so I wouldn't really take much from it.

Today is the first day it has happened for me.

BT are currently a disaster for me not that they were ever any good its all down to luck!! If you have a stable connection then your unlikely to need to contact them. If you have issues or like in my case they upgraded the exchange 10 days ago it becomes a total nightmare

Most of the phone support is based in India & they are just call centre workers with minimal IT experience just scripts to read from + very poor english  (BT have said they will take 2000 of the 4000 jobs back from India to UK but when they do this is anyone's guess!)

Getting to speak to someone in the UK takes a while & even then they are not always helpful :(

BT told me that because of the 10 day line learning period there is nothing they can do until it expires (later today!). So for 10 days I have had appalling speeds & the router keeps resetting whilst BT auto run their crappy apps which determine the line speed.

I am being penalised here as I have a very good line which is also very stable. I only live 1Km from the exchange as well. The main reason I have such an excellent line is because I had to contact the chairman of BT (yep the top man !!!) when several years ago the service was even worse!! He ensured I got a very good service & passed onto their VIP team so I also got my port in the exchange swopped out for an ultra stable one. For 3 years I have had very fast & stable broadband until the exchange upgrade!! which happened without warning or any communication.

Without boring you with any more details all I can say is if you have a good line & current broadband connection then everytime BT run their ***** little apps to auto manage line speeds to your home your totally screwed as having a decent current setup prevents their apps from working properly so you have to go through what I am phone hell to India (which is very frustrating & tedious). Their apps do not allow for stable low error lines like mine so it gets confused & you get set back to 2Mb all the time. In the last week I went from 16Mb to 11 to 2 then 7 then 2 then back to 900Kb for the last day which is a complete joke as you can imgaine not what I paid for  & BT will not help me as they insist after 10 days it will auto correct itself (which it has obviously not!!).

IMO BT are getting worse & BT are still avoiding having a decent UK presence to save money on support so if you can find another ISP do so as its going to get worse as BT expand they cannot even cope with it as it is......

I know they have had major problems recently with exchange upgrades going wrong but it was never great at the best of time (I have been with them over 9 years now....unfortunately).

Yeah check this 25 page strong thread about the traffic shaping & how no-one from BT will admit to it either! Criminal & how do they think they can get away with such blatant deception!

Oh yes they will be unless they've drastically changed their plans. Be glad you didn't see the really early designs from their "managerial" teams. I use that term loosely, alcoholics meet brewery.

There's a difference between managers, IT professionals, telecommunication engineers and tech support. Some people high up in their chain don't know this yet. :D

There was a lot of confusion because a lot of people did not know what their roles and responsibilities were. Everyone had their "input", many fingers in the violated pie so to speak. They probably don't know officially themselves yet, each department will have their own idea on what the policy "may possibly might be" but there will be no definite answer until they act as a business rather than separate departments.

C'mon, you're paying peanuts! You have no right to complain! :p

I hope you're enjoying the 18 month contract. :D

some very worrying reports there. the heads is much appreciated anyways guys; perhaps time to take a step back and reconsider my options.

Speed is still okay today, and now there is a response in the large BT thread stating that there was a fault which has been fixed. No mention what the fault was though, so time will tell...

I think its a bit of an overreaction to one problem where they mistakenly traffic shaped everyone regardless of use. I was with bethre/o2 for 3-4years. suffered probably half a dozen outages. Didnt see people complaining much about those, and rightly so.

Left BT for Sky, can't fault Sky and don't forget Sky is going to do their own version of BT Infinity, which will be Unlimited.
