Morning peeps,

Well I've had my S3 for 2.5 years now and as much as I love it, it's getting on a bit and although she's in good condition for 132k miles, it's only a matter of time before something else mechanical goes wrong. With previous repair bills being in the region of £500 and the car's value dropping quicker than a tarts knickers, I've decided to chop it in for something else.

I loved my 106GTi and always planned to buy another at some point, so thought now was as good a time as any! Thing is after looking around I realised that I've probably left it a bit late as most examples are getting on a bit now so I decided to steer clear and look for something similar; which is when I found just what I was after!

Same engine as the 106 but on an 06 plate with 25k miles. Picked it up for £4750 from the local Citroen dealer, comes with a years tax and MOT, 1yr manufacturers warranty and will be serviced before I collect it on Thursday. They gave me £3k for the S3, which is a bit less than I wanted but I've had it up for sale for 3 months now at £4k and I've had very little interest, not even a single viewing! I've got a buyer for the Starlet already @ £1000, so in total it's only costing me £750 to change.

Some of you might think it's bit of a strange swap for an S3 but it's great fun to drive and I've always really liked the styling of the C2 for some reason!

Will get some proper pics up when I collect her on Thursday (if it's not snowing too heavily!)

I don't know much about cars, but a £500 bill isn't what I would call expensive. Pretty much my cheapest garage visits are usually £250 for minor repairs.

If you're happy then great but to me, seems strange reasoning. I'd understand it more if you just said "I wanted a new car and chose this". Not trying to justify your purchase with some random logic.

Enjoy!

You paid over a grand to downgrade to a C2 when a £500 bill came in for your S3? I'm sorry but I don't get it at all. I would also say a C2 of this value is more prone to some serious depreciation than an S3 but hey, as long as you're happy ;)

audi owners!!!!!

apart from the clutch/flywheel issue that is made worse by it being 4wd, those cars are a doddle to live with. they are tarted up golfs so obviously very easy to live with.

starlet commuter and S3 weekend car.... wtf

AUDI OWNERS!!!

Of course the main reason for chopping it in is fancying something new, but there's also the constant worry that something big could go wrong at any time; it's needed £4.5k worth of work doing in the 2.5 years I've had it, and I just can't bring myself to plough any more money into what's been quite a big financial drain! I'd rather get rid while it still has a reasonable amount of value left to it.

It doesn't help that I currently drive a total of 2 miles to work every day and the temp gauge barely even starts to move by the time I get to work, that can't be good for the engine or turbo!

Fair enough but perhaps a MK1 Focus for around 3k would have been a better choice if you wanted problem free motoring and that way you would have had less outlay, I don't think chopping in an Audi for a Citroen will ease your reliability worries.

Seems like a reasonable decision to me; the S3 is only going to get more expensive to run as it gets older, and these are fun little cars to drive. I imagine performance feels a bit dismal after the S3 though!

NO HOTLINKING!

Wow, epic failure. What a nasty little car, seems a shame to dump an S3, get virtually nothing for it, and end up in that 'thing'.

The 106 GTI was one of the great hot hatches as well, that, despite the same engine, isn't...

I'm glad some of you see the logic, but I understand those of you who think it's a strange move! Not everybody has the same tastes, likes. I liked the C2 so bought one!

End of the day I wanted something small and fun to drive which I'll keep for about a year until me and the missus get round to settling down properly and having kids etc. Then I'll start thinking about something more practical. The typical choice would have been a Clio, but at the end of the day I don't like them!

i think everything ive driven using the mk4 platform has been utterly dull to drive. i terms of fun youre better off in the pug

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Is it really that bad?

Admittedly if I wanted something to emulate a 106 I would have gone for a Clio of some sort - OP did you consider those before you bought the C2?

Excuse me?

You think him spending £3k on something he doesn't want (a 12 year old Focus, no less!) is a better idea than him spending £4.75k on something he does want?

If he had changed from a MK4 Golf, no one would have batted an eye-lid, but as it was an S3 then it would seem people are offended by this apparent downgrade. In terms of fun - these C2s aren't bad and I'd much rather be driving these down some B-roads than an ageing S3. Sure, they are no Saxo/106, but they are still fun, chuckable little cars in the grand scheme of things.

This S3 was clearly a money pit, and I don't think this change needs to be criticised.

I drove one once... I had to have someone hit me over the had with a baseball bat to make me forget the experience.
