Career Decisions (IT Professionals please read!)

How long was the course then?

I'm planning to go to Vegas at 21 for a holiday...I'd rather have money to spend when I'm younger, I take it you were living at home the entire time?

What even is your point now? Loads of Uni students go travelling

I'm 19, passed my driving test, have a car

Great... but most people pass a driving test at 17 and your car isnt yours its your Mums! You told us in motors!

Job Title/Description: I'm an I.T Contractor, me!

Typical day-to-day work: Inside yo' systems, consultin' yo' problems

Highest qualification (GCSE/Diploma etc): BSc Computer Consulting

Job satisifaction (do you enjoy your day-to-day work): Being a consultant makes me proud.

Job security(do you feel you are at risk of having your job outsourced to india?): No

Salary(optional): £400 p/h

I went to Uni, got a decent job now. I might be ~11k in student "debt" or whatever, but I had the best 4 years of my life and met my partner there to boot! Worth every penny, I'd even pay double.

If you have done so well for yourself then why not move out and stop living with your parents. If I remember correctly your 5 series was your dads and yet the car I drive is still worth at least £3k more than yours. And your 7 years older than me...

Lol what?!
Honestly, what are you arguing about?

I have made no reference to how I am doing as I don't have an IT degree and this thread is about the pros and cons of a degree for IT. If you are going to hold yourself up as evidence of how university is worthless then you must be prepared for people to question you.

As for my car, you remember wrong, I bought it myself and my dad had a similar one at the time. But then I am not the one using car ownership as proof university is worthless, you are. And just lol at discussing car value, what is that supposed to mean? Well done, cars depreciate, I have owned it for years, lol.

And as you told us it isn't yours anyway I don't even see why you are discussing it

Hey guys first time posting here.

First off I'm 16 years old and doing level 3 IT in college at the moment. I'm hoping to go to Uni once I'm done with college (if it isn't 100k a year by then). I'm having real trouble deciding what I want to specialise in and chase a career in. I know I prefer the hardware side of computing in general to software, however I do enjoy programming.

Long story short, could you guys fill out the little questionnaire below for me, I'm trying to get an idea of what the job market is like in IT at the moment. Thanks all

I dont have a degree, my highest IT qualification is NVQ3 and i'm employed currently and working my notice and progressing onto a new job in the new year

My brother has a 2:2 in Computer Science and has just got himself a job as a data builder is it? Cant remember the title, for the usual uni leavers starting salaries

I'm really not sure what car people drive or if they live with their parents or not has got to do with it, people need to live in the real world, just because you're happy with your relationship at the moment doesnt mean that it will always be like that and if you do split up (which from I can tell is likely) where you going to go? Renting, paying someone mortgage for them? Nah.

Job Title/Description: ICT Technician moving to ICT Helpdesk analyst

Highest qualification (GCSE/Diploma etc): NVQ3

Job satisifaction (do you enjoy your day-to-day work): Yup, need moar monies and thats coming thankfully

Job security(do you feel you are at risk of having your job outsourced to india?): Not at the moment as its customer facing

Now what are you on about?

Is this all because you are upset everyone thinks you are a temp?

What is wrong with temping anyway

But being a consultant is more important and sounds better than "temp".

This means a lot when trying to impress forum folk about how good you are and how much money you earn and what car you drive.

Important things in life: What others (especially folks online) think of you.

I think we have all learn't something here today.

I agree, he is trying to convince himself he is happy with his situation by rubbishing the alternative and trying to imply he is not temping doing data entry.

Silly thing is that there is nothing wrong with that job at 19!

Out of everyone on here of course I am at the bottom of the barrel. I want to run my own business and I don't temp out of choice, but I can't afford to just turn down work, money and experience just because I need a perm job.

Why did people start going on at me just because the rate of pay I was on was lower than someone who had 10+ years experience in the industry?

He's pulling in over £2k/mo, which at 19 is bloody excellent. Even if he is working double the hours. Respect.

Those student rioters could learn something from this guy.

I thought his latest figure was 35 hours a week at 10 quid so 1400 a month. Still good at 19 but not a reason to claim university is worthless.
