my shortlist so far is -

Archos 70
-7" 256mb, 1 ghz cpu
-400g

Archos 101
-10" 256mb, 1 ghz cpu
-480g

and the Advent Vega
-512mb
-tegra 2 cpu
-700g!

Any recommendations or experiences would be very appreciated :)

Advent vega is the best, it's the most powerful and most hackable (allowing you to get Android Marketplace on it). The 101 is a close second, with a slower processor, still with the marketplace hack available.

The 70 is the same as the 101, except for the screen (but running the same or similar resolution, making it a bit sharper looking). It's as good as the 101, it just depends on whether or not the 7" is enough for you.

Finally, the 70 is the only one currently in stock, for at least a week or so, which may well be the deciding factor, for me at least.

The Vega is good, but is work in progress, the Tegra 2 platform and SOC will only get better with driver tweaks and improvements. Gingerbread will greatly improve it.

Yes true, same could be said for the Archos range aswell. I'm ready to order one, but it's been in stock 5 times so far, for about 30mins to 2 hours, and I've missed it each time. :(

Not sure if it's some form of beta testing or just that they just didn't realise how popular it was going to be. Rather annoying either way, I can see this dragging onto next year, where I'll but one of those notion ink adam things.

yeh it is tough isnt it. Currys and Pc World appear to sell them, whether its in stock is another question!

The vega looks decent tbh, and i have heard good things about the archos's how ever i would be tempted to wait until new year, i think google may be making a tablet centered UI!

Android 2.3 supposedly is designed to work with tablets, the next step will be 3.0, hopefully any bought now would be able to upgrade in the future...

I had a go on an Archos 101 today and wasn't very impressed with the screen. Scrolling also seemed pretty jerky compared to the Galaxy Tab next to it.

That's not very sporting :-/. I'm set on a vega, or one of it's clones now anyway, I don't really need one, so waiting isn't too much of a problem. Except for the desperate longing obviously.

My impulse buy Advent Vega turned up today, and in ways its quite impressive, the dual core Tegra 250 chipset is really quick, especially with the Modaco addons.

All the main flash sites work brilliantly, etc, apart from screen having slightly narrow viewing angles, its just mimor stock android stuff that are the only annoyance, but getting the right apps (e.g. Launcher Pro, and a decent keyboard), and it really starts to shine.

I just put the winter live wallpaper on, and it looks amazing, as does angry birds @ 1024x600 all silky smooth!

I only ordered saturday, and it turned up today, so its not too hard to get one, and its certainly looking to be well supported...

In some ways its slicker then an iPad, in others, not so.. Its petfect as a more portable netbook, and a genuine 8+ hour battery life..

I hate you :P

They haven't been in stock for ages now, I've been checking a few times a day..Glad to here you like it, has made me want one more now:(
