Hey guys,

Looking for a good soundcard for music and gaming. I have a budget of £180, but don't really want to overpay as I am only using a 2.1 computer speaker setup, thus I may not need the biggest and baddest soundcard as my speakers are not £4000 speakers. Any suggestions? Cheers.

Steve.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm currently using Monsoon MM-1000 Multimedia Speaker System. They are speakers from 1999. They stopped doing this line in 2004, however the speakers still seem to be top notch. Found the following refering to them:

"Monsoon-branded speakers, whether sold by Sonigistix or Level 9, have developed an almost cult-like following due to their perceived high sound quality and accuracy, particularly uncommon (at the time of their run) for the personal computer marketplace. Dedicated owners of Monsoon flat panel speakers will often go to great lengths to keep their old Monsoons running, primarily because it is commonly held that available new replacements made and sold by other manufacturers are seen as inferior-sounding."

So all in all I am pretty happy with them, so it's just a case of optimizing the soundcard. Your right £150+ seems excessive considering I am not using a £1000+ sound system, so I am stuck as to which card to get to get the best out of these speakers.

Cheers.

I swear some people don't read the OP. He is looking for a sound card.

It's hard to recommend a particular sound card. Until now I'd never heard of those speakers. Due to their age, finding comparison to newer speakers and how they sound with modern sound cards is almost impossible.

They do get a lot of praise on the US jungle site, and a good review from Anandtech. Probably either a Xonar D1/DX or D2/D2X.

My bad and +1 for the Xonar D1

Have a look round for a used X-Fi Elite Pro. Paid less than £50 for mine and paired with T40 speakers its brilliant. In fact the speaker sonly cost me £30 so £80 and i have a great sound setup i think
