Is my friend stupid?

Not really, it was a sarcastic post not done very well. I was just trying to dispute the relevance and point of mentioning the fact you can buy 100 £100 cars for the same money. Actually I'm disputing the fact the events in this thread are even taking place.

No, you are furiously backpeddling after you thought you'd pedant his poor maths only to find you'd added it up wrong :D

edit - ffs what a useless gif :(

If you had have asked me this 10 years ago I would have said he was mad but after years of paying to get old cars fixed I bought a new punto 1.2 and kept it for 6 years. For some reason the the insurance was much less than older cars. After that I had a punto grande 1.4 and still have it. I'll probably get something a bit faster one day but it's too nice paying no maintenance and having no breakdowns, paying peanuts in petrol and insurance and having cheap tax. Tbh, In the early years, I was broke down that often that it got to the point where I just wanted a car. Never regretted it, that's why I had another. I dont find a new car much more expensive than an older one. Also it's a much nicer thing to pay for. In the 4 years I paid for the first punto, I never once regretted the £124.89 payment but in the previous years I always hated paying for the repairs.

Just curious to know how you think that driving a £100 car is equally "fail" as being lumbered with a £10,000+ debt on a 1.2 hatchback?

I would also like to know what the fundamental difference is between driving around in a 100 quid car and driving around in a P reg Fiesta.

Sorry to interrupt the Fox/JanseyB forplay, but I really wish I could lash 10K on a car, and then 2K on insurance, and then NOT drive it because petrol costs too much. Seriously what freakkin planet do these people live on.

So how doe he get around? Bus ticket? - surely that costs the same or more than fuel?

Yes my mistake, £100 gets you a very nice car these days.

It doesn't necessarily get you an unroadworthy nail. Spent correct it'll get you a car that will get you from A to B, fundamentally the same function that this £10,000 Seat will perform, just without the crippling debt that the young lad WILL come to regret (probably as soon as the '11' plates hit the street and his car is no longer new).

I'm not implying in any way that a £100 car is a viable alternative to a Brand new Ibiza, but I don't see how pottering about in a hundred quid car is anywhere near the 'fail' as lumbering yourself with a considerable debt at 17 years old in order to drive a rather rubbish car.

9.99/10 times it will get you a nail, unless you manage to pilfer a car from a family member on the cheap. There's no shame in doing exactly what you said, I've been doing it since passing my test however a £100 car is just crap whatever way you look at it.

He can't be rich if he can't afford the petrol consumption on a little 1.2L engine

I just don't get it. Sounds like he just blew everything on the car and insurance and now doesnt have a bean left and can't even afford to run it.

Seems like the most pointless purchase ever.
