Volvo slogan - "More to life than a Volvo"

Could Volvo be the next Saab?

A company famed for distinctive design and rock solid build quality that starts platform and parts bin sharing resulting in a dilution of the brand values and cars that are no longer rivals for best in class.....thats how Saabs decline started was it not?

I like Volvos for what they are but can't say I'd go out and buy one...

Glad to see I'm not the only one confused by this weird slogan, I really can't see where Volvo are heading with slogans like that.

Slogan makes perfect sense to me.

However, I'm going to swap the "Volvo" word for "Mercedes S-Class 320CDi" as I've learned to absolutely loath motoring for 5/7 of my life (having to visit clients by car tends to do that).

I seem to recall a study done a while back that car adverts are mainly aimed at the people who have already bought the car, to make them feel good about the purchase, rather than aimed at prospective buyers in order to increase re-purchase rates, brand loyalty and word-of-mouth advertising.

This might be rubbish though as it's pretty much regurgitation from a mate's marketing degree done a decade ago :p

A mate of mine has now had about 5 volvos. The slogan is definitely about safety - ie your family is more important than anything, put them in a safe car. My pal had plenty of interesting cars over the years and then the moment his first kid was born he bought a volvo and has had nothing but volvos since! Motivated by perceived safety. In fact they are a 2 car family with 2 volvos!

As there are tonnes of very safe cars now this aspect of their marketing seems a bit redundant to me, but what else have they got.

Its to do about the people IN the Volvo, you know, with Volvos being safe and all........

OCUK media studies fail, you all get a big fat U.

I think I understand it.

I believe that what they're trying to say is that a Volvo will help facilitate you do other things in life. ie. because it's comfortable and practical, that it'll get you to your weekend away in Cornwall, and that when you get they're you'll not be completely knackered from driving something with lousy ride quality and naff seats, that if you have weird loads, it'll probably still fit (how is it that BMW thought it was a really useful to have non-folding rear seats).

I guess the fact that I believe I understand what they're getting at is probably the reason why I have one. Love mine.

I see. Fairly typical brand prejudice then.

Just because it says Volvo on the badge, doesn't mean they're big box estates from the 80s

As I said I've not driven a C30, I have driven a fairly new S60 and that's what I based my comments on, try reading my response. Just because it says Volvo on the badge, doesn't mean they are some kind of supercar.

Have I have dented your ego or something? Am I not allowed to dislike a certain type of car?

Makes sense to me? There's more to life than a Volvo - i.e. you don't want to spend all your time worrying about the car, you want to use it as a tool to let you live your life. They're not aiming it at car enthusiasts, they're aiming it at people who want solid reliable wheels.

Not at all, I was just shocked that you seemed to have decided every single car in a manufacturers range is boring without having ever driven one. Plenty of people think that just because of the badge, it's a mentality I can't quite comprehend.

Sorry for not liking very heavy, extremely refined cars that isolate you from the road but I just don't. Of course some of Volvos competitors are no better; I'm not singling out Volvo especialy, it's simply that this is a Volvo related thread.

I only mentioned the C30 because it's closer to the type of car I prefer (apart from the revolting rear styling), but the majority of Volvos range simply don't appeal to me in any way at all.
