Hey , I'm thinking of going to Egpyt in February and was wondering if anyone has been to Cairo that can tell me what they thought of it? I'm planning of staying in Egypt for a month but i'm unsure on how long to stay in each part.

I want to go to :

Cairo
Luxor
Alexandria
Sharm El Sheikh

I was thinking of having Cairo as my main destination and then going to the other places for a 3-4 days each. ( Recommended?) I'm on a budget but i'm looking to do the usual tourist thing like pyramids etc. What was your favourite or worse things about any of the places above? any things overrated / underrated?

I would go to Luxor as your base because Cairo is very expensive and a crap hole.
If I had the money I would live in Luxor in a heartbeat.

From Luxor you can fly up to Cairo, go down to Aswan and over to Hurghada which is another version of Sharm El Sheikh.

In April me and the Mrs did a 7 day Nile Cruise from Luxor and took in the trip to Abu Simbel.
We then flew up to Cairo for 3 days and then down to Hurghada for 5 days.
It was there when we knew we weren't going home (volcano) and made our way to Luxor where we spent 7 days in a hotel called St Josephs.
It cost us around £220 for the 7 days which included our room, all meals and our beer for 2 of us.
Because of the extra 7 days we took in other trips that most don't do including Abados, Dendera, Valley Of The Queens, Ramasseum and others I've forgot.

If you are doing the Giza Plateau get there early and remember that if you want to go inside the Great Pyramid you have to queue for another ticket and they only let 150 in a day.
I would also suggest going to the Red Pyramid where not many people go.

i have also heard this ^^^
as dmpoole said, Luxor is meant to be really nice.
my uncle just returned from Sharm El Sheik.
he enjoyed it, but said the security checks get tiresome after a while

Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are basically Blackpool with the sun so don't expect any history.
Egyptians will hassle you in Luxor but you just walk straight past them.
Luxor also has the most historical places you can visit including Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley Of The Kings/Queens, Ramasseum, Luxor Museum, Hatshepsuts temple, Mummification Museum and other stuff.
Cairo basically has the Giza Plateau and Museum and is a dirt hole but great experience.
Memphis, Saqqara and the Red Pyramid are only a few miles away from Cairo.

I went this year but these are pictures when I went two years ago - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/egypt.htm

Nice pictures.

So you don't recommend Sharm El Sheikh then? I was only going to go as it was £110 cheaper to fly there then to Cairo ( £200 vs £310 ) But ive just had a look and Luxor is £250 so i might give S.EL.S a miss.

My Mum/Brother/Sister/Brother's GF is over there as we speak. They are loving it at the moment. Had a bit of a freak weather hit the other day, gale force winds, literally on and off. Weather is nice at the moment apparently.

One bad thing she told me is that my Bro's GF got about 5 security checks because she is quarter Jordanian, with the surname 'Alfaraj'. She has a British Passort and is a English citizen, but she looks Arabic. But they kept asking her about her visit and what she intends to do over the next 2 weeks etc. A bit excesive.

If you want to snorkel or basically stay in your hotel for the duration then go to Sharm.
Walking out at night is horrendous because you're walking down a dual carriageway with a taxi stopping every 30 seconds.
Even when you've moved a taxi on, the one behind it will try and so on.

Consider basing yourself in Luxor and look up St Josephs.
When I first saw it I was upset but within 10 minutes I was on the roof terrace and fell in love.
Swimming pool, Premier football on the TV, overlooking The Nile, burger, chips and bread for about £1.50 and a bottle of beer for £1.60 - I was well impressed.
