FAO those that work in computer/mobile forensics

We've just employed two mobile forensics people and are bringing all of the phone work in force - I'd suggest police forces are a good place to look as more will be doing the same.

So from you forensics guys, how effective are things like drive wiping tools, drive encryption, CCleaner etc.? Can you get past those easily?

No, I'm not a paedo. :D

Sorry I can't be of any help, but I only learned recently that networks record all of your text messages for the investigation of legal matters...

... so don't do your drug dealing via text y'all

And if you have a BlackBerry running through a corporate BES your company will most likely have some csv files loaded with every text message content, phonecall log and PIN message content sent to and from each and every device :)

If you "delete" it, depending on a bunch of factors you could probably recover some to all of it.
If you overwrite the data, it's gone, even with just a single overwrite, and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. (And if they refer to the Gutman paper then they don't understand it).

I'm giving nothing away :)

Please... it's public knowledge that the police can't defeat encryption or recover erased data.

Personally the idea of working in computer forensics interests me, though it would have to be in a business environment, too many ethical problems working for the police.

The correct tools used in the correct way are perfectly effective :) Correctly applied crypto will also stop a forensic investigation before it begins.

People make mistakes though...

Yep locking up sociopaths, deviants and sexual predators is abduction.........

It does give you a lot of job satisfaction though :p

"Deviants", so you think that it's acceptable to lock people up because of their personal preferences. This is exactly why I would not work for the police force, so many innocent people arrested because of some cartoon porn or other victimless crime.

You can't have seen many then, who pray tell is the victim of someone possessing videos of consensual sex, or cgi tiger porn?
