E46 330i Idle Dip Issue - Am I Being Paranoid

Still an issue this morning - idle revs were now ok the only issue this morning was when braking with the clutch in, the mpg gauge would slowly creep up to around 30mpg and then dip off as I went below a speed of 10mph

Maybe an air leak somewhere?

Of course it does, the fuel consumption per mile increases. Think how many gallons an hour it uses at idle.

Then think that at idle with the clutch in it will get half the miles per gallon at 5mph than it would at 10mph. The fuel used at tickover is the same But the miles covered per hour goes down, so lower mpg

my mistake, by increase I mean it move from the left (where it normally sits whilst clutch in braking) slowly to the right - so in effect the mpg is decreasing sorry for the confusion

Yes that is what I am trying to tell you!

Of course the mpg is decreasing, your fuel usage per second is staying the same but your speed is dropping.

Therefore decrease in mpg because you would cover less miles on that fuel!

I don't get why I keep having to explain this.

mmm Having thought about this, it does make sense and I see your point but it didn't do this before last week is my point.

On Monday when I was looking at the cd changer I also played around with the tests on the instrument cluster (checking coolant temp, battery voltage etc), I wonder if I inadvertently activated some setting that enables mpg consumption to be read whilst the clutch is in?

Before, with clutch in, the mpg meter would be almost all to the left (reading 50+mpg - not to be confused with when engine braking as that's all the way to the left ie no fuel consumption)

Have you considered just getting a Fiesta :p

Lol thanks but no thanks, I love 99.9% of my car but it's the 0.1% that's not right, which I focus on and ruins the enjoyment

You've probably just never noticed it before as it isnt the sort of thing you study the operation of unless you are looking for a fault. It sounds like the MPG guage is working just fine to me.

You seem to be having an awful lot of difficulty with this car and throwing money in the wrong direction etc.

I guess you are right Fox and I appreciate your assistance, as I said, I am noob at cars and I'm sure it didn't do this before but maybe it's now fixed as it makes sense to act like this :)

I may have overspent on the service but I haven't thrown money at it in the wrong directions :p

Anyway a colleague recorded a (pretty horrific) video of the behavior now during lunch, it's a bit out of focus but you can kind of tell what it's doing, especially with my running commentary - excuse the South African accent

oh btw Fox I also took a pic showing the normal idle revs, along with the temp gauge slightly off centre which I was talking about in another thread (await how crap car is comments ;))

I'll get some brake cleaner and clean the DISA, MAF and ICV myself - looks like something I could manage

Thanks for the help, seems it is normal behaviour
