Hi guys,

Hope you can all help. I have bought a new keyboard and mouse from a well known auction site. i am very happy with the peripherals themselves but the absolutely stink of cigarettes. Being an Ex-Smoker I totally hate the smell of it;

What can i do to get rid off / improve the smell of my peripherals?

my peripherals are that of a fairly bespoke taste. i will have some issues finding them elsewhere - i know that ocuk have the kb i want, but are out of stock. and dont do the mouse i want.

The smell will reduce eventually but another option is to bag them up and place them in the freezer overnight. Works for stinky boots and prob will for this?

As plastic cannot absorb any smells, just give it a clean.

The keyboard may require the keys out, but at least you will get rid of all the old hair and sandwich as well.

What cleaning products would you advise that i use?

I always clean my stuff with baby wipes, although some make a better job than others (don't use the tissue type wipes).

Also a can of compressed air would probably be pretty good for when/if you remove the keys of the KB to really remove all the crap underneath.

The gaps between the keys is probably full of ash particulate. I always used to smoke over my keyboard when I smoked so it must have been really messy in there. Rip all the keys off and give the surfaces underneath and the keys themselves a good clean

Any multi-surface cleaner, washing up liquid too would be good.

strip the keyboard down remove the top and wash it with dishwashing liquid, and do the same with the base, the keys a baby or other hygeine type wipe and blow all the dust from the remaining bits - about 30 minute to strip clean dry and reassemble, an annual job on my Saitek keyboard :)

If the KB has no LCD you could shove it in the dishwasher. Low temp, top rack and leave it to dry for at least 48 hours in a warm place.

Simples.

Or try some of that cleaning gunk stuff - it looks like play-doh
