5870 vs 6950 Decision!

The exact same choice i had. upgrading from an old x1950 pro. I ordered the 6950 10 mins ago. Very please everyone agrees its the better choice. I hope its going to be a big upgrade as im sure it will be.

Heh, it seems like it's the end of the line for my x1950 aswel, but i'm just not sure whether to get the 6950 or the 6970. Will be gaming at 1920x1200

Finger's hovering over the 'buy' button as we speak :p

Going from an x1950 up to a 6970? It will a HUGE upgrade! The two cards really aren't even comparable. Off the top of my head, you're looking around factor of ten performance increase - not to mention DX10 and DX11 compatibility.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with your purchase!

I know the feeling. my finger was hovering too. was about to last night but waited till this morning on the off chance that gpu was on the christmas daily special. But it wasnt so went for it anyway. I think you should go for the 6950. Dont be greedy. (what i realy mean is i dont want to be jelious) fortunatly my family are all chipping in to pay for it and i could have put some extra in to get the 6970 but thought i would save the £50.

People that are upgrading from the X1950...I hope you guys have a good enough CPU as well, otherwise you end up with the slow CPU dragging the 6950's legs.

Too many people make the mistake of thinking that by putting a modern fast graphic into their 4-5 years old dual-core PC would be all they need to get good frame rate in demanding games, and not taking consideration toward the rest of the system.

I built my i7 rig a few months back but just haven't had the spare cash for a new graphics card :(....until now :D. Still can't decided on 6950 or 6970 though, i'm leaning towards the 6970 just for the extra mileage i'll get out of it

It would be fine with the Q6600, as it is a decent Quad-core. I was more refering to people with CPU like Athlon 64X2 or the old version Core2Duo that will have CPU bottleneck on modern cards.

Yeh i had that feeling. I still want more RAM. but dont realy want to spend £60 on more DDR2.

If you are not too fussed about the extra tessellation performance, and is not gaming at above 1920 res, how about considering the MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR instead:

Putting the extra tessellation performance aside, the 6950 is only roughly as fast as the 5870, and the 6970 is only roughly as fast as the GTX570/GTX480.

Yes the 6950 is a good card, but I don't think it is extra £100 worth of better than 5850. You can almost buy two 5850 for the price of one 6950 :D
The MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR on pre-order is absolutely steal!

HD5870

Reviews of the HD6900 cards show them to run quite hot and be loud under load, especially with crossfire.

I think a few had them louder than GTX480 SLI reaching over 95C... Ouch....
