6870 or 5870

I know these cards are not supposed to be the upgrades of each other but right at the moment their priced very similar £190. So why not get the more powerful 5870 over 6870?

Depends, the 5870 wins on outright performance but no by much but the 6870 uses less power and has more features such as support for running up to 6 monitors at once, 3D Blu-ray and Morphological AA as well as other things.

I would go with Raven's suggestion and get that 5850, overclock it so it gives 5870 performance and save yourself some cash. I kind of regret buying my 6950 as for another 30 quid i could have got 2 x msi 5850's.

That's a bit misleading, just because overclocking the core doesn't guarantee you better performance in games. Yes in benchmarks Cypress when overclocked is liner but in games it's different as some game engines don't work better with more shader engines others prefer more Mhz. It's hit and miss and the 5850 is around 25% slower then the 5870 so that's a fair chunk of performance to risk on the returns on overclocking.

6870 - support for 6 way eyefinity! God that's a lot real estate.
