Can someone who recently went through the process answer a few questions for me?

Would prefer via email if possible (in trust).

Not on the cards for another several years, but might as well get reading now so I know what to work towards.

Thanks.

you mean Emigrating.

A forum member here emigrated out there - his name is Evangelion. Hopefully he will see this thread.

I have a 457 visa, but *I think* you have to have employment confirmed and a company sponsor you for this type of visa.

Aren't there some changes going on with the process at the moment? Also, Evangelion - I always thought you were an Australian living in the UK who then went home again so not strictly emigrating to Oz? Maybe I picked that up incorrectly though.

I think the changes take effect in April 2011.
In the shower at mo so will dig out a link that might be helpful in a bit.

spiders man... abort mission.

I spent 3 weeks in Sydney and only seen one spider. In the zoo. :D

They are about though.....

Plus I did have some weird beast which looked a bit like a scorpion in my shower at an apartment complex.

Yeah it's gonna be an overseas employer app so hopefully the company application to become a sponsor will be approved. We're using an agent.

What visa route did you go down?

I didn't need a visa; I'm Australian. :D However, I can give you a few tips about the emigration process.

I'm applying for a SC457 soon. :)

Good luck! :)

Correct. However, my wife is a Pom, so had to apply for a spouse visa. The application process took about 2 months, and she received PR spouse visa, which grants her permanent residence in Australia. I had registered our daughter as an Australian citizen born overseas, so she came over with us on her own Australian passport (she also has a British one).

Hmm. Might be time for another update thread.

I'm currently living in NZ on a one year work visa going through the residency stages. It's a lot harder than the UK thats for sure!! They seem quite fussy about stuff and you need good health, character, etc. No idea what its like for Oz though. If I fail to get it here I may head over to Oz for a year and see what its like there. In no rush to go back to the UK thats for sure!

I moved out to Adelaide on a skilled migration visa in 2005. Came back to the UK in 2009 (due to a number of things out with my control) but heading back to Australia in the near future. Now have citizenship so no problem with the return. I'm not enjoying being back in the UK and find I'm a lot more homesick for Australia than I ever was for the country of my birth.

Getting the original visa was not easy and with the route I took it all comes down to if the skills you have are required and can be properly evidenced. Education is important but experience in the field critical.

From what I've heard, getting residency for NZ or OZ is quite tough, possibly one of the hardest countries to get into?

As others have said, you usually need a skill that is in demand. Failing that, a lot of money, but even that's not a dead cert. :P

I wish you luck though. :)
