MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850 Twin FrozR II 1024MB GDDR5 - Opinions

That 5850 is just the best value card - but they're not so great in crossfire (don't scale as well as nvidia or the new 6xxx series) and minimum FPS don't tend to improve as much when you crossfire as the average and max.

It's the minimum FPS that I'm bothered about. Check out the above chart.

5800s scaling probably around 80% on average (up to 95% in some titles), GTX480/580s around 85% on average and 6800/6900s at 90% or more. There are some games that favour Crossfire or SLI though.

i wanted cf with the new 5850's but id rather have a single card, the price 5970's are going for is silly so id snap one of those up.

If I'm paying similar money for similar performance I'd rather have the 2 year warranty than take a gamble on a second hand card.

Right that's it done, gone for the MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850 Twin FrozR II 1024MB GDDR5 Crossfire setup. Should be able to get £50+ for my 4890, so not a bad upgrade for £200. I nearly went for a 5870 when they dropped to £234 the other week. Held off and nearly got the value 1 for £179.
As I said it's the minimum FPS that I'm interested in so 60fps will do me fine with all the eye candy on. There are a few cards around 60fps and only the GTX 580 beats that, but it's not worth the extra cash for an extra 7.5fps.

Just waiting for stock now. Thanks to all the posters for their advice.

I really wish I could decide a 5850 or 6850.
You better make up you mind soon. According to Gibbo there's only 500 units of those MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR they will be getting, and these are the last batch from MSI's clearance of their inventory so there will be no more stock after these.

There's probably about 10-20 members already placed the pre-order for 1~2 cards, and most likely many more pre-order has already been placed that we don't know about. So if you gonna place the pre-order, better do it soon than leaving it till the last minute.

Edited: 200 units sold already according to Gibbo, and the deal has only been out for 2 days:

I am getting one of these for crossfire. I have a card with a reference cooler. Am I right in assuming that i should keep the reference card in the top position and mount this MSI card below it?
When mounted, there will be a slot sized gap between the two cards.

This is what I think...since the Twin FrozeR cooler actually dump most of the heat back into the case, I think it would be better to have the reference card at bottom instead...because 1) the top card tends to have higher temp, so having a better cooler card would keep the temp lower 2) if you have the Twin FrozeR card at the bottom, it would mean the heat it dump out would be draw in by the reference cooler card at top, thus making high temp even higher; also the reference cooler is exhaust out the back, so there will be less heat being intake into the Twin FrozeR cooler card at top
