UK government proposes to block all Internet porn as standard

Tefal, you're too keen to comment on things without paying proper attention to what people are saying in this thread. You're too concerned with disproving others.

1. Yes, I'm afraid that's exactly what Hatter was saying. It's not an important point though.
2. The news.com.au article quotes the Sunday Times nearly word for word, as has been stated.

The Government should regulate internet service providers (ISPs) to stop children unwittingly finding pornography online, an MP said.

Conservative Claire Perry (Devizes) said children were finding it increasingly easy to access violent and shocking content on their home computers, while there was little adequate protection available to parents.

But culture minister Ed Vaizey, said the Government was in favour of a lightly-regulated internet. Those who posted illegal material would be prosecuted but ministers wanted to work with ISPs on any changes.

Claire Perry is a nobody.

I wish there were less thick people here (like the OP) who a gullible, post drivel, and seem to accept it. I mean come on - news.com.au ffs

ok just for me where does he say that?

I've had an internet connection since I was 10 and I'm fine ... I think

I'm sure for responsible parents with young kids this would be fantastic. But then again as responsible parents, surely you should be monitoring your kids activities online anyway due to cyber bullying on msn and social networks etc. Of course in reality this isn't always practical due to other responsibilities so having it filtered at the ISP level would be great.

I would also like to see ISPs given more responsibility in terms of educating their clients about parental controls,Internet browsers aimed at children, free AV software and free malware protection.

Personally I don't mind because they are giving you the choice of being filtered or not. I'm old enough and mature enough to opt in ... plus I need my weekly 4chan lulz :p

It probably won't even happen.

How about parents learn how to control and monitor their children's internet access instead of just sticking them in front of the computer and expecting the state to do it for them?
I don't mind having to opt-in, but this almost condones lazy parenting.

If this is indeed true, I look forward to the banning/destruction of the scunthorpe football club website in the near future

It's no surprise that this comes shortly after the US government gets the power to shut off torrent sites at the source.

What's important isn't the nature of the sites they say they're going to cut off (torrents, pornography) but rather the infrastructure they will put in place that will allow them to stop public viewing of any site they choose, at any time.

Wikileaks has got them running scared, and they're desperately trying to grab some kind of control over what the people see and hear over the internet. Today it's porn sites, tomorrow it's sites that they deem are acting illegally (Wikileaks).

How about parents learn how to control and monitor their children's internet access instead of just sticking them in front of the computer and expecting the state to do it for them?

But....but....if they have to actually do things like that, who will babysit their kids for them while they watch Coronation Street and Strictly come cooking on ice factor talent??

As far as I'm concerned, this is taking things a little too far. Are parents that irresponsible that they can't monitor their child's behaviour?

Well in the US most seem to be, you should hear the "{this game} is why {this crime or act} happened" & "{this movie} is to blame for {this}". Wish parents learned to actually raise their kids right!!!

Slippery slope towards censorship of the internet - first it comes in through a way that people find it difficult to argue against before turning into a way of limiting access to sites "for your own good" determined by the government.

It will also cause huge expense and ultimately be passed onto consumers through higher internet prices.

This could also actually do more harm with parents already lax in monitoring their child's internet use thinking its now a safe environment.

Porn on the internet is:
A) Not the worse thing children need protecting from
B) Has to be sought out anyway - which those determined will still find a way of finding.

People need to learn to be responsible for themselves and their children.

The internet should be open full stop... this is the first step :(

There's a lot people arguing that Wikileaks are a government run operation to justify government tighter controls over the internet, I'm skeptical but I can see how they can use it to their advantage... it's going to be the old "we need to take control of the internet for your own security" excuse just like every other draconian measure introduced since 9/11.

If the government wants to combat the sexualization of children start with the music industry and mainstream music channels, children are exposed far more by those than they are by porn on the internet.

not read all the thread.

not sure why they just never made all porn sites use .xxx instead of .co's or .coms, that way it would be really simple for parents to block any .xxx websites to protect the kids.

It won't work.

But I don't actually see a problem. I remember having to tell Orange in the past to opt in to adult sites (it blocked this place one time).

IF they get the techonology aced (which they won't/can't), it could just be a tick box on account sign up. No harm done.
